Made it to 3,400 miles without cracking my windshield. Honestly sounded like a truck passing by threw a bolt at my window but was probably a rock. Crack spread in 2 days from just a chip to what you see in photo. Safelite didn’t have an opening until Wednesday next week. My question is, if I make sure to park in the shade and drive careful and avoid slamming any doors, do you think it’ll still spread past the 6 inches rule I keep reading about, changing it from a free repair, covered by insurance, to a $700 replacement by next week?
UPDATE: crack remained the same
Size as original photo. Safelight technician just finished. 100% Happy with the results considering I paid $0

In Florida, its a replacement, no matter what, and insurance covers the replacement with no deductible, as long as the damage/crack is longer than a dollar bill. I once got a rock tossed at me while driving home to Florida on I-20 in Texas. I called my agent, who scheduled the replacement when I got to Florida (about 12 hours later), as the initial hit (like yours) spread to a long crack as I was driving.

It's too bad that your state does not have the same insurance rules.

Hmmm I may have to call an actual human at my insurance to discuss it because online it seemed like they only covered a repair for free. Thank you for the heads up!!

My first one the crack went from instant 2" or so right when it happened to about a foot within 10 minutes. The second was instant 4" or so and grew over a couple days to over a foot.

Oooph that’s not good. I never realized how large this windshield is til a few weeks after purchasing it. It’s pretty interesting how far down it goes into that gap behind the hood. I’ll keep y’all updated but I’m really hoping it doesn’t spread like yours did. So far it’s stayed at what’s in the photo.

2021 Badlands. Here in SoCal I had to wait 2+ weeks for a windshield.

They told me no aftermarket replacements are available so had to wait for a Ford OEM.

Damn. These wait times are crazy 2+ weeks seems insane to me. Did your insurance cover the replacement? I’m pretty sure I’m a dumbass and am mistaken that once the crack is no longer repairable it’s a full cost replacement.

AAA insurance. I have $250 deductible. That was my cost.

Replacement and recalibration was about $1100 total.

With respect to using Safelite:

I had a star in my windshield. Kept it in shade and didn't drive it for two days until Safelite could show up to fix the star.

I was standing outside where the Safelite guy couldn't see me when he drove up. The star was the same size it had been for two days, around 3/8" in diameter.

As he got out of his van, I went inside to get something, looked at my watch and came out a couple of minutes later. The star was now a 12 inch crack. I'm 99.99999% sure the guy smacked my windshield.

I've never done business with them since that.

Thank you for the heads up. I’ve heard a lot of bad things but that might be a deal breaker for me. I was gonna have them come do it while I was at work but now feel like I gotta clock out and go watch. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some loophole to making more money for a replacement and some technicians take advantage of it. I’m sorry that happened

I've used Safelight several times for several cars over many years. They've even come to my house when I was away from home and left my car in the driveway. Their service has always been excellent. Don't judge a company by one unfortunate incident.

No, I'm done with them. I found another company owned by a Veteran that does it for substantially less than Safelite.

There's a lot of that sort of thing these days. There's an Air Conditioning company around here, big company, lots of technicians but the problem is that the technicians are also commission salespeople.

Started wondering when one of them came down from my attic and showed me a video that he said he just took showing a fan wobbling and making squeaking noise. He said it needed to be replaced immediately or it could come through the ceiling and I was in luck, he just happened to have a new one in his van and it was only $600.00 The main problem was that I was standing right under where that fan was, my head perhaps 8 feet from it and it wasn't making a sound. I guess he forgot to turn the sound off on his phone because he was arrogant about what he was doing.

Found out a few months later that evidently all their technicians have that video on their cell phones as a couple of friends mentioned they'd seen the exactly the same video and gotten the same con.

That’s a huge problem with hvac services right now I’ve heard. I wanted to get into hvac and a family friend explained to me that unless it’s union your essentially a salesman and have quotas you have to meet etc. it’s a shame, always feeling like someone’s trying to rip me off cause I’m so willing to pay what they want if it’s a legitimate purchase now I feel all paranoid all the time.
