I think the real reason to get a matching wheel/tire for the spare is so that you can rotate it in. Of course if you had it mounted in the back, as was said, you would want a match. You should never buy a tire that has been sitting in a warehouse. I think the number is 5 years, you should not buy a tire that is 5 years old or more (check date code on tire). Now if you have a spare that is never being used because it doesn’t match, then it is just sitting in the back and rotting. Then at some point when you really need it, because you’ve got a flat in the middle of nowhere, you’ve got a rotten spare that may not be safe to use.

Just my thoughts on the issue.

This is the first new vehicle in about 8 years. The last two we ordered matching spare wheels and did five tire rotations. I’ll be at the dealer next week and order the matching wheel/rim for my spare. Totally spaced it when I picked it up. When I decide which tires I’m getting, I’ll have the wheel all ready.

anywhere you can get a set of steelies for a very cheap price? was thinking of making a set of "winter" tires/wheels for mine....we dont get that much snow here in this part of MD but some....i just like to have the option and not buy a set of T/A KO2's for the whole year when most of it is dry pavement....
i have a BS BL on order....

You might consider these. I was considering getting one, as a full sized spare with a 225/75/16 tire... https://www.discounttire.com/buy-wheels/liquid-metal-atom/p/48999

...but ended up with one of these, in Gunmetal, when Discount tire matched Amazon's then lower price... https://www.discounttire.com/buy-wheels/vision-cross

Don't they all come with either a.) the small temporary spare, or b.) the same full-size 17" Pirelli? A mismatched spare is not uncommon at all, it's for temporary, emergency use, not to drive on for any distance other than to get it replaced. It's up to you if you want to buy a matching replacement spare wheel (i.e. wheel and tire matching whatever you may have now for the other 4), and where to put it if it doesn't fit in the spare wheel well.

A spare isn't necessarily a temporary thing, though that is the way most manufacturers treat them and people have come to accept that. I think what is really weird is that if you get the tire upgrade to the 235 AT's, the spare is still a 225 Scorpion. When they say you get a full size spare tire, that is kind of stretching the truth a bit.

Stock Big Bend rims and tires here and I tossed the donut and bought another set of 4 OEM rims and tires from a wholesaler for $650. Ford wanted 1050 just for the rims only lol. Tossed 1 into the spare tire spot, had to lift the rear mat to the upper notch as I only have the Big Bend, but it fits snug and I don't even notice. Other 3 tires are at home under a tire tarp enclosure until needed as they rotate out for wear.

My opinion is to buy your rim online and not from the dealer. Plenty of take offs available.

Good point. Or check the thread in this forum. I just bought a matching wheel from a forum member who changed theirs. Next week I‘m ordering 5 Falken Wildpeak A/T Trails in 235/65R17. I plan on a 5 tire rotation, like I have done on past vehicles with full size spares. I don’t see the point in wasting a tire. I’m pretty sure my spare Pirelli does not have a TPMS sensor, so I’ll be adding that to my list as well.

My understanding is that the spare does include the TPMS but I can’t find where I saw that so maybe in my mind. In any case, I bought another WildPeak with said TMPS.

Any reason you are going with the Trails instead of the AT3W?

My usage will be mostly, if not all, on road, but my area does occasionally get snow. I drive between Washington and Southern California. The road ratings and tire mileage (65,000 on the Trail) also factor in. My neighborhood roads are oil and gravel, not typical asphalt. The tread on the Trails is not quite as open as the A/T3W. For my driving needs, it just seems a good choice. I probably would have gone for the Wrangler Workhorse, but they’re only 50,000 mile tires. I’ve read primarily good reviews on Falken’s A/T. I just don’t really need something quite as aggressive as the A/T3W. There is always the pissibility I’ll change my mind when I go order them. My spare rim arrived today. Thank you Barry. I’ll see if the salespeople give my a reason to change it. ?

Your rationale sounds reasonable too me.

You might want to look at 245/65/17 in the same brand tires , fit perfect with no mods .

The first decision I made, actually. I debated stay with 225, going to 235 or going to 245. I decided to stay with one of the sizes the factory actually puts on. As it stands, I’m not sure I want the added weight of a 245, if I have to change it myself. My main reason for changing tires is snow. I want something more then the Pirelli’s.

The other benefit is it fits perfectly in the spare tire wheel well without having to remove the sound insulation. I think with the 245/65-17’s, you have to remove the sound insulation that comes (came?) on the Badlands and Outerbanks trims.

I did have to make a part to hold the new rim down though. Basically a washer and a M10 nut.
