Windshield Wiper Arm Issue

I noticed that when I was cleaning the windshield the other day and tried to pull up the wiper arm up to clean under the wipers, the hood stopped me from lifting up the windshield wiper arm. Anyone else notice this? If I was still up north in Indiana, I would sometimes pull both wiper arms up at night so the wipers would not freeze to the windshield if parked outside in the winter. Seems like an unusual design. Maybe put most of the wiper arm under the hood for better gas mileage? What do you think???

Well, I don't think it is that unusual - my VW had the same design and it was almost 10 years old.

Here's how you put the wipers into service mode so you can lift them up:

I think putting the wipers under the cowl is just for looks. You can stuff a pool noodle in there to prevent ice building up, or you can get a full windshield cover.

Regarding blade maintenance, you can do as Catie says (i.e. the manual), or you can simply rotate them up by hand. Just be careful that you don't pull them away from the window far enough to touch the hood; that's a good way to lose some paint. Also make sure you put them back down again by hand before turning the vehicle back on. As soon as you power them up they'll return to the parked position, and if they're lifted away from the window they will definitely scrape some paint off your hood.

The way the manual lists to do it is the way I have done it on all of our vehicles always. I NEVER try to move the wiper arms.

I have never tried to move the arms either, only lift them to clean under the wipers. With the way they are configured, you can not lift them like my other vehicles in the past.

They move pretty easily. I don’t think there would be an issue in moving them and raising the arms. Just make sure you put them back before starting the engine or turning on the ignition.

See SSM 50200 2021 Bronco Sport Front Wipe Arm(s) Or Wiper Blade (s) Replacement Service Procedure Tips, Damage to the wiper motors may occur unless these steps are followed prior to using the Workshop Manual (WSM) procedure in Section 501-16. To remove the wiper blades:
1. Place key fob inside the vehicle, press the Start-Stop button without applying the brake pedal.
2. Activate the wipers using the stalk switch. Do not manually rotate the wiper arms and blades. Damage to the wiper motor may occur.
3. When the wipers are at mid travel, press the Start-Stop button again to leave the wipers in a service position.
4. Service the wiper blades once the wiper arms are at the mid travel position using the procedure in the Owner's Manual.

If you have hood struts, which lift the hood more than the prop, you can lift the wiper arms with the hood open. Just be sure to put them back before closing the hood. This is nice for applying a windshield treatment.
