What's all this PLASTIC?

What's the point of this plastic structure behind the rear view mirror? Kinda annoys me. Now that I'm conscious of it, I've been looking around to see if other vehicles have so much ugly bulk behind the mirror, and I don't see it. (Loving my new BB, but this bugs me.)

Okay, sensors, cameras, etc... Just seems like more bulk than anything I've seen on other vehicles, but I haven't surveyed everything. Will keep an eye out for equivalent bulk.

Adaptive cruise control, light sensors, probably the camera that changes the speed limit display on your dash etc. Pretty much any vehicle that has these features have some sort of housing at the top of the windshield. More expensive vehicles tend hide it better. My wife's car is sleek, my BS is bulky and my pickup has crank windows, a rubber floor and a stick to change gears. ya get what ya pay for with all this tech.

It's the crash detection equipment if you look through the owners manual it tells you what it is

That is the housing for the front camera and radar that tracks high beams for auto high beams, radar used for intelligent cruise control, etc.

My Fiat 500, Fiat 500L, Colorado, and Trax all had similar obstructions.
