Is it a type of horse, or a breed?
Uh oh, some owners aren't going to like this!
According to this linked article, the term comes from the Spanish and means "rough.
In consideration of Ford's current reputation for leading in recalls...some may think that it is a fitting name for a Ford product.

Of course Bronco owners past and present understand that it is it's ability to handle rough terrains.

The Ford Bronco uses a bucking horse, so I think they were thinking of like old west or rodeo

What Is a Bucking Bronco?

A bucking bronco is a term commonly used in the world of rodeo, referring to a horse that aggressively bucks and attempts to throw off its rider. This thrilling and dangerous event has captivated audiences for centuries, showcasing the strength and agility of both horse and rider.

That is explained in the link I provided.
"American cowboys borrowed the lingo from their Mexican counterparts to describe untrained or partially trained horses. Originally, cowboys probably used the term to refer to breaking wild horses, but today's broncos are not feral. "

"... a horse that aggressively bucks and attempts to throw off its rider."

Perhaps not the best name for a vehicle.

And yet, a symbol of the Wild West and an evocative name for a vehicle. Traditionally, a bronco you broke yourself was a better, stronger, faster and more loyal steed than one you just bought from a horse dealer. Much like Mustangs.

Steamboat.

(If the reference doesn't immediately come to mind, here's your fun homework for the day: search for "Steamboat Wyoming" for the story.)

It's an obscure reference these days, except for Wyoming natives, I suppose.
Otherwise, someone would have named their BS Steamboat, or have they??

Just commenting that Steamboat was one bad-a Bronco. So, yes, my BS BL is (appropriately) named Steamboat!

Not just for the Badlands angle, but also because Steamboat was featured in a great Walt Longmire story, "Spirit of Steamboat."

Cheers!

So, certainly not the worst either. I always just figured Ford just likes horse names. Bronco, Mustang, Pinto, Maverick,

Studebaker Dictator?! That has to be the worst.

I was being sarcastic. I think "... a horse that aggressively bucks and attempts to throw off its rider" is funny.

I'm sure most people interpret "Bronco" as Ford intended: wild; fast; strong; free; able to travel over almost any terrain...
