I did the OR exactly a year ago, same Jeep thing going on. Stayed at a very budget hotel as I had my dog with me as my co-pilot. Totally agree the food provided was sub-par. With all the amazing restaurants in Moab, this seems ridiculous. I drove by myself (+copilot sssh) and was in the rear. The best part of being last is you can hold back and then take the trails at speed to catch up. Learning the trail control and rock crawl mode was the best part. I’ve used it several times. I live in UT so Moab is only 4.5 hours away. The next day I took trails on my own in the vicinity and went places I probably would not have tried in the past.
Your trail experience was actually fairly normal and to be expected. It's been nearly 20 years since I was active at Moab, but used to go there almost every year for awhile. I was a moderator on the old Explorer4x4.com website (now explorerforum.com) and we used to have a large group of Ford Explorers meet in Moab every year (never the same week as Easter Jeep Safari!)
I've run dozens of Moab trails. By day's end you can expect that something will happen that will stop the run for awhile. Sometimes minor, like a tire, sometimes major, like broken mechanical parts; but something is gonna happen. IMO a group of 7 is about perfect; more than that raises the odds of more breakdowns/delays from more vehicles being on the run, and less than 7 there's less resources (read - someone that has the right tool to fix the repair) in case of breakdown. Just expect something to happen, and when it doesn't be pleasantly surprised.
Moab is fourwheeler offroad Heaven. I highly recommend doing it at least once. I even got married there, on the ledge at the Top of the World trail there
