It wasn’t the turn signal bulbs it was the brake light bulbs. They weren’t getting bright when I hit the brakes. I replaced those and the hyper flashing went away. The dealership was swearing up and down that it could be the bcm.
Article from a website.

Replacing your indicator bulbs is much the same process as any other light on your vehicle, but with one important difference. Your car’s indicator wiring circuit has been set up for incandescent light bulbs which offer a particular amount of resistance. In comparison, LED lights offer little electrical resistance – and in layman’s terms this means your car’s indicators may “hyper flash” (flash very quickly) if you replace all the bulbs with LED’s.

In order to fix this, you must either purchase LED bulbs which are advertised as having the correct amount of resistance built in, or you’ll need to purchase separate resistor units which must be spliced into the wiring circuit to slow the flashing back down to the normal speed. This is obviously a more involved process, so if you aren’t confident with the job I certainly wouldn’t tackle it yourself without doing some research first and having the necessary tools.

Do they sell LED bulbs that already have the resistors built in? Perhaps that’s the case with the ones recommended on the forums. Because I’m trying to figure out why an LED bulb meant to replace an incandescent, wouldn’t already have these resistors built in. I mean you’re going to need it right?

This is only an issue with turn signal bulbs.

Yes they do. I have purchased bulbs from Diode Dynamics for my '19 Ranger. They do cost a bit more, but they are quality bulbs.

Good point, the same number bulb might be used for more than just turn signals.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m ok with it costing more to do it once & not think about it again!

Keep in mind that one of the reasons for using LED bulbs is to reduce the electrical load on systems. Having resistors built in defeats that purpose.

Very true, which is unfortunate that these systems in the 2020s were designed to still need it. You’d assume that by now everything would be designed with LED bulbs in mind. But I think everybody has already covered that topic as it saves them a few bucks per car.

My '19 Ranger came with a mix of bulbs. The Lariat pkg (which I have) was the only trim level that came with some LEDs- head, fog & tail lights and the interior. The remainder were incandescent. You would have thought that with the 19MY being the launch of the 5G of the Ranger, the lighting would be LED on all the trim levels.

My car just started hyperflashing on the instrument cluster only. Normal operation with the bulb. The turning signal bulbs are OEM but the reverse and brake lights are LEDs from diode dynamics. I wonder if the dealer will give me grief about that when I take it in.

If it works normally with the stock bulb, then yes, the dealer is going to give you grief. It means that you should get some higher quality LEDs.
