Hi all: my last visit to the dealership noted rear brakes were at 4mm and they recommended new pads and rotors. So do you think I should drop the $ now or could I wait until 2 or 3 mm? I’m not a hard breaker but I do use them obviously. My fronts were replaced with the CPO. Slotted upgrades would be nice and ceramic but I’ve read where ceramic aren’t all that as they heat and/or go off-road.

Im wondering what others have experienced when it’s time to replace and whether there are OEM upgrade options.

You can inspect them yourself fairly easily. The pads have wear indicators. 2mm will likely result in the wear indicator contacting the rotor.

Just had my fronts replaced at 75000. Gone are the days of having rotors turned and they just replace. It was a $600 bill.. Need to get back to doing things myself but with all these electronics it is no easy feat anymore. They also wanted to do the rear but I am like you and felt they still had life left so I am holding off.

Wow! 75000 and first time replacing? My ride is at 40k and Ive only had for 5k so the owner before was a heavy braker I guess. Either way cheaper than the M performance brakes I had on my BMWs.

I have done my own brakes for years--ever since I had a British sports car and all the shops told me that they do not work on those. DIY brakes are much less expensive and you get your choice on components. I replaced all four brakes and rotors for my Escape for about $275.

I do all the brakes on our vehicles. Our BS/BB has about 37K& have not checked them yet & the last time it was into the dealer for the maintenance plan oil change & tire rotation they did not say anything about the brakes yet.

Remember if you do the rear brakes, put the parking brake in service mode. Easy to do and there are lots you YouTube videos as to how.

When you take your brakes in to a mechanic, they usually tell you all the springs are worn out and need to be replaced. They make more money that way. I've done brake jobs on my vehicles for 50 years and never replaced the springs.

NAPA has a chart that shows the braking distance on different quality brakes. I was doing my grandaughters brakes and went with the ones that had the shortest stopping distance. It didn't help enough, she still ran into the back of a semi stopped in the road.

When I was poor, I would just replace the pads, but soon found out that they wear out faster if you don't have the rotors or drums turned.

It is good insurance to replace the pads before there is metal on metal. Replacing rotors costs much more than turning them.

My wife wears out brakes much faster than I do. When I see a red light 1/4 mile ahead, I take my foot off the gas. She doesn't.

Rotors and pads are pretty inexpensive and easy to replace yourself. Most dealers will rebuild the calipers, replace the pins, etc. I never had to replace the backs on the Escape but did the fronts about every 50k miles. Back drums on older cars are a pain because of the brake adjuster. But even those are pretty easy compared to most other things.

Well the deed is done. Thanks for the tips and advice. Ended up doing a Full replacement of rear brakes pads, rotors, and a few extra parts compliments of noise everyone is hearing. The setup looks brand new. Got 10% off, used a couple hundred ford pass points and out the door for $400 and sadly no grease on my hands. ?

Id love to do my own work but getting older and don’t have the garage space; plus I have a warranty to 8yr/125k miles so would rather their hands do the work so I can’t be blamed for work that caused other harm.

Added more Ford pass points for another day. ??
