well-- just a few weeks after getting the vehicle back from the shop for a repair to paint chips, I was driving down the freeway --- heard a poof and crackle.. moonroof shattered.

dont think anything hit me (there's no souveniers sitting inside my moonroof screen). Was only a few miles away from a dealership so I limped it there, and they said its likely an insurance claim--- but under 1000 miles, this vehicle is fragile! :-(
Ford Bronco Sport shattered moonroof 20210525_165328
That was a defect in the glass. Moon roofs are tempered. When tempered glass breaks it should blast into a million little square pieces. That glass was improperly tempered and should be replaced by Ford.

The glass just doesn’t look right , something is awfully wrong with this moonroof,I would be asking why the safety glass in this roof is not in a million pieces. If you hit that roof with a hammer it would and should not look like that. Have a glass shop look at it ,get their opinion and then go to two more shops for their opinion.
Actually if you hit safety glass with a hammer it shouldn't break...tried forced entry with an axe and it just bounced. Needed a window punch to access the driver. As stated by a lot of folks, just blew into a million pieces. Small tools breach that kind of glass better than blunt tools. It could have been a very small stone hitting just right.

Tell me more about this-- "waiting for them to install on new builds"... that's interesting to me...
Its posted on a few threads about ordering. You cannot order moonroofs until the 2022 build. They are no longer available.

Back in the '90's, my wife had a relatively new Taurus in which the rear glass shattered and fell inward. It was a zillion small cubes of unsharp glass, pretty uniform in size all on the rear deck and rear seat.

Update-- told insurance that i didnt believe anything hit me-- but they said they didnt have a way to prove it was "bad glass", so they're going to cover it under an insurance claim.

no word on eta yet

What has Ford/your dealer said about it?

Like others have said, the way it broke is not the way auto glass is supposed to.

Oh...dealership went straight to the "debris" cause right away, wouldn't entertain warranty

the dealership isn't completely wrong, and it's likely difficult to prove. Logic says it had to be some piece of debris, and honestly, it could have been a very small object. I'd also agree, new vehicle, high temps and humidity, that's also just as likely. I don't doubt your story one bit...but any time a dealer can avoid a warranty payout they will try. It's worth fighting up the chain...you shouldn't have to worry about stuff like that in a new vehicle. I'd guess there will be more incidents like yours and possibly a recall at some point if it was a structural/design/materials flaw. At least nobody was hurt.

There is no reason why the dealership wouldn't have covered it if this just happened on its owned. They are 100% reimbursed by Ford and that a main money maker for them.

While I certainly understand determining the liable party would serve justice, it sounds like the insurance company accepts the situation and comprehensive claims typically don't affect rates. Hopefully the OP won't be out, except for downtime.

It would be nice, for the bigger picture, for a glass specialist to evaluate the debris to determine if the glass is truly safe. I'm certainly only speculating, but many of us noted what appears to be an abnormal failure of automotive safety glass. We said this based off of a single photo complicated by ceiling and windows reflections, but it certainly looks like there are some jagged edges and the potential for shards. If so, I wouldn't want that flying around the cabin during an accident, especially if driven by front and side curtain airbags. There's a lot more material there than in a Takata airbag inflator. Hopefully, the glass is not a problem.

It looks like it might have been a good thing that when I ordered my Bronco Sport I couldn't order the moonroof in the OB package,

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but customer satisfaction surveys were always a big deal, literally. If the dealer consistently received five star ratings they would receive a blue oval certification. As noted in the waiting room thread, those certifications bumped a dealer's status and availability of certain ordering and product options. They thrived on that type of feedback. crapping on a customer claim doesn't end well. It's one thing if it's clear neglect or mistreatment by the owner, but this isn't even close to the case. With a brand new release, I'd tell a customer, we will investigate what happened, report the findings to Ford to ensure customer safety, and have that glass replaced as soon as possible. In the meantime here is a comp car to take care of you while you wait.
WHY? my navi-control unit went out on my challenger the week we planned a trip to Hilton Head...dealer gave me a new charger...I told him I was driving to SC. He said enjoy your new car, bring it back with all the wheels on it, until yours is fixed the charger is your ride. The challenger will be waiting when you get back. Saves some miles on your lease. It's not your fault"....THAT is customer service.

yeah I don't mean to salt the wound...yet another reason I specifically chose no badlands package, no moonroof. It's a pretty thing, but wrought with options to fail. leaks, cracks, malfunctions which I've had happen with the only moon roof I owned. Swore it off never again. Ford should still make this right.
