So when backing up the differential is catching and making a terrible noise like a stuttering when it snags.

Even driving forward at low speed it pops continuously.

Took it to ford and there definitely was no issue with them hearing it.

Apparently its a known issue (TSB 23-2335)

According to mechanic the drain tube for the rear diff gets clogged from road debris and dirt gets into rear diff.

The repair is rerouting drain tube (backordered of course) and changing fluids.

Anyone has pictures or videos of the vent location and replacement part. Also, anywhere someone have video on DIY fluid changes for front and rear Diff? Thanks!

I'm sorry this is going to be a copy/paste but its too much to type...
I made a write up about this a few weeks ago. I had mine serviced at 20k. started chattering at 37k miles. Dealer was on a 4 to 6 week wait so I walked into the parts department, bought the proper RDU fluid and a bottle of Motorcraft XL3 friction modifier. Mixed the friction modifier into the quart of RDU fluid and drained and filled my unit. Mine chattered and the fluid was crystal clear with no contamination. Added the new fluid concoction and the chatter went away immediately. AWD engagement is fantastic, and smooth as can be.

I'm covered until 75k miles but I got sick of driving over an hour away to get into a dealer with a piss poor attitude and wasn't going to make a payment on something collecting dust in the service department lot. $65.00 bucks and 20 mins of my time to save weeks worth of headaches was worth it to me.

As far as the actual procedure goes.. very straight forward. If you have a set of torx bits and a drain pan, and a 10 dollar fluid pump from Autozone that is all you will need. Crack the fill plug loose, pull the drain plug. Let er drip for 20 mins and put the drain plug back in. Fill the unit back up until it runs out of the fill hole, re-install and torque your fill plug. Service complete.
