I’m not a math wiz nor maybe the smartest man, getting down to 1gal of gas but I was just trying to get a real reading for mpg compared to advertised and what the dash is telling me. From what I think I’ve come up with is that I’m getting less than what my dash is telling me. I thought many would find this interesting and thought maybe somebody could recount my apples for me at the same time. First time so I will try to attach photos below in 3 different gas-ups. Math at the end...no promises.

Feb 20th 1gal left

925.5-674.8=250.7/16gal=15.81mpg compared to Dash 17.6mpg?
91 Prem $3.42/gal 15.86gal $54.37

Mar 5th 9gal left
1189.6miles / 19 mpg(dash avg) 14:58hrs 265miles(from 15.86gal) 1189.6miles-925.5Miles=264.1miles/15.86gal=16.65mpg compared to Dash 19mpg?
91 Prem $3.53/gal 15.43gal $54.46

like I said. Not a math wiz. Just want to know if im correct in saying that I’m not getting what my dash is telling me. I realize I’m not getting the 21mpg but its winter, so snow, 4x4, remote start in mornings, heater, new car driving it pretty hard...

My dash computer tells me my average mpg in my 1.5L base BS is holding at 26.1 over my last 500 miles.
When I do the math at the pump (miles/gallons) it is consistant at 24.8 mpg.
My other trip meter that's not been reset in 1500 miles shows me 26 mpg.
,
I figure they all do that to keep the EPA at bay, I'm cool with that.
I like the 26 number better, :'P

I have found that though they may be close , they are never 100% correct , they are just a guide to go by . By all means use the Odometer & do the math when you fill up , its still would not be 100% correct for a couple of reasons , one being Fuel expansion in the Tank with ambient Temp. from one fill to the next , then you have the meter on the Pump , is it calibrated , then it would be driving habits , altitude , on & on ,its just a guide , as with the gal. till empty , I wouldn't bet my life on it .

A lot of variable go into calculating real world gas mileage. I keep track of mileage in a spreadsheet for tax reasons. I added fuel purchases because I was interested. I don't have my BS yet so I am working from my ridgeline. Generally the ridgelines computed mileage is 10-15% higher than the pump to odometer calculation. Over 50K miles living in the Red River Valley of North Dakota my mileage calculation has varied from min 11.08, max 27.46 and average 21.19. I remember the max road trip and the ridgeline was saying I was at 30-32. I fully expect that Honda is purposefully lying to make you feel good about my purchase and I expect the same from Ford. I don't think the manufactures will be fixing this until someone brings a class action suite against it. If you want it fixed and are a lawyer I would be willing to share data. I expect that my data with another hundred or so consumers gathering the same data would probably get computed mileages to be pretty close. As for if you think you could make any money on it...Nope lawyers will get that.

So I look at what my pickup says and subtract an 1/8 and I am pretty close.

Actually all of your replies makes sense and really shouldn’t be surprise. Thanks for the help. I actually am in love with this thing otherwise. Got it just in time for a few good snow storms. I’ve been having a blast In it.

The MPG displayed by the vehicle is affected by many things, including a sensor that has +/- tolerances. It is an educated guess at best.

I have only done one highway trip in mine so far. (BB with 1.5 3cyl.)

on the return trip I filled up the tank, set the cruise to 66mph and popped it into eco mode. I’m not sure what the tank capacity is but I got 170 miles on exactly 1/4 tank. Computer said 37.1 but if the tank is 16 gallons, my math comes out to actually be 42.5 mpg which seems impossible. However, 1/4 tank is 1/4 tank so either way it does much better than I expected it to.

My F-150,
My Transit Connect,
Now My Bronco Sport,
All the same,
Dashboard mpg reads about 8 to 10%
More than the accurate/actual math of miles divided by gallons to the tenth.
Was the same with my two Tacoma's.
No big deal to me, I like seeing 26.1 vs 24 mpg on the screen.

My BL trip estimate is very close each time. Within a couple tenths either way (yes sometimes I get a hair better than it says but on average it's a slightly less). Consistently getting way better than EPA figures and trend is better and better now with 2700 miles on it. Overall average a little over 26 mpg with most recent tanks in the 27-29 range with a couple 30 mpg outings. Combine that with its off-road prowess and Ford hit a homerun in my book!

When I do the math, miles divided by gallons to the tenth pumped I get 1.5 to 2.0 LESS miles per gallon.
Ford sure does average up on the dash LED's.
My average per the screen is 26.2 to 26.8.
Per true math over several tanks I'm getting 24.5 to 25.1 mpgs.
Hey that's still really good but it makes me wonder what else Ford exaggerated on, like Hp/Torque for example..
