Oh yes, they want you to finance and get all kinds of kick backs. We paid ours full cash. They offered us a extended warranty. I checked personally he next day with 4 companies and every one of them was $2000 to $2500 Cdn. for the same warranty.
How much did they want for the warranty?

Did they claim that (essentially) the BS is a POS that will fall apart after the factory warranty ends?

Our dealer claimed that we were likely to have a lot of problems and began talking about how much the backup camera costs. Ironically, there is a "customer satisfaction program" that covers the camera for 15 years -- free replacement. I guess they'll have to come up with another potential failure to attempt to scare customers with.

When I bought my RAM, I paid 55,353 dollars in 2015 the sticker price was over $68,000. 9 years later I traded straight across for the 2024 BSOB. Which was over $37,000 so not too bad. I still wish I would have kept the RAM.

Damn, prices changed a lot in the early 2010s. I bought a 3500 Dually with Cummins diesel in 2010 for $42,000. I don't remember what the list price was.

My dealer got me $13,000 in discounts. I don't think it was on the lot very long.

And...people think that they are going to keep their vehicle forever so the longer terms are fine...then 2 years later that old car is boring. Do that a few times in a row and BOOOM...big negative equity.
Yeah, screw that. I had my 2014 Forester for ten years. Replaced it at 170,000 miles. I was going to sell it for a few thousand, but right after I ordered my BSBL the CVT went out so sold it to a buddy for a few hundred (over 7k for a new CVT). I figure that with my 11 mile drive each way instead of 32 to 34, I'll only have at most 120k in a decade. I did just under 10k this year, with a 500mi trip, and another 3600mi to the MOAB Offrodeo. So a few road trips and I should still be under 12 on average. Maybe a replacement in 12 to 15 years.

My wife had her Outback for about 11 years with I think about 70k. Her Forester lmdid only last three or four months, but that's because we got hit and rolled by some moron.

Big difference, basically twice as much!

That shows how much profit there is in extended warranties.

Buying one is 'betting against the house' -- and the house always wins in the long run. If possible, it's always better to be self-insured.

That said, most of us cannot afford potentially catastrophic events, so homeowner's, health, auto, and maybe life insurance, are necessary.

Auto repairs are a grey area -- some people can cover a major repair (which may never be necessary) but others can't. In that case, a discounted extended warranty probably is advisable, even though statistically the purchaser will likely lose money on the deal (same as other forms of insurance).

Where being self-insured definitely makes sense is with all of the "protection plans" retailers are constantly pushing -- even for items that cannot break, like a bag of lava rock.

I think I paid $2500 for the extended warranty on the RAM and never used it. But I think I'll have to purchase an extended warranty for the BS. I'm too old to work on my own vehicles anymore plus you need a computer degree to figure anything out.

That's like me, Owned a repair shop but now I only do minor stuff. I didn't take any extended because if you read the fine print there are a lot of rules and regulations

No negative equity and a minimal loan on the Bronco Sport that will be paid off in the next 2 months. Traded in a 10yr old vehicle that had already been paid off for over 5 years. Plan to keep the Bronco Sport for 10 years as well and then move on to the next vehicle in 2036.
