HOW I GET THINGS DONE

This morning I decided to clean out my garage. It’s such a beautiful day and nothing else is planned. At the end of the day, finally, my garage is going to be organized, clean, and look fantastic!

As I open the garage door and look out, I notice that I need to water my garden. That won’t take long and then I’ll get back to tackling that garage. But as I turn on the hose in the driveway I look over at my Bronco Sport and decided it needed washing. As I start to it with the hose, I noticed yesterday’s mail on the porch table that I had lost earlier, so I decided to go to the mailbox again today before I washed our Baby Bronco. So on the way out to the mailbox I laid my car keys on the table and put yesterday’s junk mail in the garbage can under the table: but I noticed the can was full, so I decided to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first.

But then I think: hey, since I’m going near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I might as well pay the bills first… so I take my checkbook off the table and I see there’s only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find a glass of tea that I’d been drinking that I’d left out. First I need to put the tea away so I don’t actually knock it over when I do get out my checks. The tea is getting warm so I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

So as I head toward the kitchen with the tea, I notice that the dog’s food bowl is empty. As I bend over the doggie food bag trying to scoop up some food with one hand while holding the tea in my other, a vase of flowers catches my eye that needs to be watered. As I put the tea on the counter, I discover my reading glasses that I had been searching for all morning. I decide I’d better put them back on my desk - but first I’m going to water those flowers. So I set the glasses back down on the counter and fill a container with water: but then I suddenly spot the TV remote - someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV we will be looking for the remote, but by then I won’t remember it’s on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs… but first I’ll water those flowers. I pour some water in the flowers but quite a bit spills on the floor. So I set the remote back on the table, get some towels, and wipe up the spill.

Then I head down the hall trying to remember what it was I was planning to do.

At the end of the day, the Bronco isn’t washed, the bills aren’t paid, the tea is still warm and sitting on the counter, the flowers don’t have enough water, there’s still only one check in my checkbook, I cannot find the remote, I’ve lost my glasses, the dog is starving, I don’t remember what I did with the car keys, and I have no idea what I set out to do this morning in the first place.

That’s okay, there’s always still tomorrow.

In the meantime, I am trying to figure out why nothing got done today, because I am really baffled. I’ve been busy all day and I’m really tired. I realize this is a serious problem and I’ll try to get some help for it, but I can’t remember who it was I was going to ask.

You should have started off with a beer.

At least then you would have accomplished something.
