I would rather have a company that has voluntary recalls than one that denies there is a problem until the government forces them to do a recall.
It's likely they're just doing that because they realize the penalties are less severe if they self-report. I agree it's better than denying it, but it's still not good.

Kind of like the doctor telling me he has to amputate a leg and asking if I want it cut off below the ankle or below the knee. The real answer is I don't want it done at all, but if I have to choose, below the ankle is "better."

A catch 22.

Farley said 3 years ago things would improve. Whether proactive vs. reactive this is still way too many recalls.

These vehicles now are so complicated and computer reliant.

Ford needs to do much better, somehow, someway.

No the penalties are not that bad due to the amount of income companies make today. If they were that severe GM would of disappeared from "fines" years ago.

I was a quality control inspector for parts manufacture that stamped parts for Ford, GM, Saturn, Chrysler, H1 Hummer. I can tell you that there is no question Ford was the pickiest out of all of the Brands. If a piece of lint from the cloth gloves was in the die and left a imprint on the bumper they would reject the entire run. GM\Saturn would take almost anything (and I mean 7 inch cracks in the passenger side floor board of Saturn's, I guess GM figured no one would ever look under the carpet.)

GM, Toyota and Hyundai denied till they were blue in the face that MILLIONS of blown motors were the customers fault and not theirs. Years later they were proven wrong. Did the customer get compensated for their new truck with a blown motor sitting at the shop for years! Nope....did they get a brand new motor?..nope, all replacement motors are on back order. Did the bank say "Hey, don't worry about making payments till your truck is returned to you in working order." Not a freaking chance.

I buy Fords for a damn good reason. I've seen first hand how little the other brands care.

I have a 2019 F250 with 150K. It has had less issues than the time I have had my 23 OB, which is 4k miles now and at 40k. Hardly acceptable. I want to like it, so I bought a ESP from Flood Ford, looks like that will be money well spent!

I think you meant penalties, not personalities, but yes... this is my day job and the agencies are much more lenient and willing to negotiate remedial actions if the manufacturers find the problems themselves and self report. It usually takes one big event that the government finds to make a manufacturer get serious about being at least a little more proactive.

Ford has been getting hammered with quality issues for years now, more so than the other automakers, they just cant seem to get a handle on what the driving cause is.
Are there vendor issues, acceptance of poor quality parts or software to keep the lines moving, is it engineering, is it poor management, is it workers on the floor or a combination of some or all.
You would think Ford would have figured it out by now.

You hit all the issues on the causes.

There really aren’t any excuses for it. None are perfect, but If other brands can do well, Ford can to.

It certainly isn't good how they have a recall but then don't have a fix for months. Like the current Escape recall for the windshield wipers and display. Or the fuel injectors on the 21-24 fuel injectors that have had how many fiixes?

And not a recall but damn, how has the brake moan been going on for so many years?
