COSTCO doesn't care which side of the car the gas tank fuel fill is on. If you are on the wrong side of the gas tank they will drag the hose over your car. No thanks.
I usually go to WAWA for gas and they will tell the customer that they have to move the car so the gas tank filler is on the same side as the gas tank.

Only in New Jersey and Oregon.
I pull up to whichever is open. I'm not waiting even longer when the hose is long enough to reach around the car. And you don't have to pull it across your paint if that's the fear. Pull it behind the vehicle so at most it touches the window, something you won't scratch. Or even across the top since there are those roof rails there.
