Hopefully this helps anyone searching for answers on the rear end grinding noise.

My 2022 BS BB has been making a noise that sounded like the rear brakes scraping since 9 miles. I’m at 650 miles now and have a new RDU unit on order.

if you take The spare tire cargo panel off and drive it, the noise will be a lot louder.

seems like a lot of people are having this issue. I’ll report back once the new unit is installed and let you all know if the noise went away. Luckily my dealership cares about its customers and a tech rode in the trunk trying to pinpoint the noise.

they compared it against a bronco sport on the lot and an employees BS. neither made the same noise as mine.

I’m guessing there were a bad batch of parts used in the RDU unit. Hopefully the new one solves the issue.

I ended up having the EXACT issue in this thread. Their solution was insulation, so I went to Ford for a buyback and got into another BS BB and just paid the difference.
I’m happy you got a different BS BB, but what “difference” did you have to pay?

Found a temporary “fix” - turn off traction control and the noise goes away. I really hope ford issues a TSB for this.

So there is still not a TSB fix for something they issued a TSB that stated they would have a fix around December of 2021?

Ford added 3M sound deadening insulation to the soare tire well, noise cannot be heard at all.

Is it the noise that sounds like metal scraping on the rear rotor? I had that since the start and dealer claimed they couldn't hear it.

I had a grinding/scraping noise coming from the rear end last summer. I feared the worst, like the rear diff going bad. Mine seemed to only make the grinding/scraping noise when the rear was engaged, like at a quick take off or using Sport mode. After poking around underneath, I found a shiny ring rubbed into the drive shaft. The heat shield above the drive shaft was loose and fell just enough to rub against the drive shaft and the sound was amplified into the cabin. Once I adjusted the shields for clearance, I haven't heard the noise since.

Some dealers blow. Luckily my friends work at my local dealership. I even had my first 2022 BS BB bought back over the noise. It goes away with traction control turned off. Wish I knew the actual source of the noise.

this is my 2nd BS BB in less than 2 months. Both had the same issue. We all checked underneath for anything rubbing, nada. Thanks tho!

Did they cover the entire spare area? Or just certain spots? I have a similar noise and some left over 12x12 sound deadening pads from another project. I think I will try putting them in and see what happens. If you don’t mind could you snap a pic of your spare tire area that they insulated?

Following the thread. My wife swears it's there and loud, but I can't hear it with my tinnitus
