Question:
How many y'all just turn the car off without shifting into PARK first, and let the PCM do it for you? ?

I first learned of this when I had to get a spider off the sun visor - opened the door at a red light and had my foot on the brake, shooed it off. Close the door and light turns green. I step on the throttle and not moving - panicked for a good 30 seconds until I saw I was in park. Neat feature haha.

I always do it in mine. Trouble is, now I do it in other vehicles. We are taking bets on when my wife’s car will roll into something and what that something is. :stop::stop::stop::stop:

Yeah, I figured as much in the responses. I just found out about this the other day. I guess everything being equal, its less stress on the dial to just simply turn off the engine.

Sometimes, like today, I just forget, so I’m glad some clever Ford engineer has my back. I drive an F250 and F150 as a beach ranger and force myself to double-check I’m in park when I leave the vehicle. On deep sand we rarely brake and often stop for extended periods in Drive. I once left it in Reverse when I was helping a stuck vehicle. Seeing my backup lights on from 20’ away was a wake-up call!

My father-in-law spent a couple of weeks in the hospital recently because he ran over himself. How? Well, he's 84 years old, and he forgot to put the transmission in park before he got out to check how close he was to the curb. The car started moving as soon as he stepped out (it was in reverse), the driver's side door knocked him down, then the left front wheel ran over his foot. His girlfriend (also in her 80s) stopped the car with the emergency brake, but not before his ankle was crushed.

This scenario has played out a number of times over the years, with results ranging from embarrassment to death. And it doesn't just happen to old people. Actor Anton Yelchin died when he was pinned between his car and a gate post at the end of his driveway. Authorities speculate that he got out of his car to check the gate or the mail and neglected to put the transmission in park.

Some may not like this feature, but I do.

I'm sorry to hear about your FIL. I hope he's recovering well. Im sure the situation is stressful, in particular for your wife.

The actor's death played a major roll in the TSB for the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel I had.

The TSB corrected the issue that allowed the vehicle to stay in gear when the drivers door was opened.

It didn't have a rotary knob, it was an electronic gear shift lever. Piss poor design and a pain to use.

I’m so very sorry for your family and, as a Ford retiree, very proud of our safety features.
