Critters Nesting in 2024 BS Big Bend

Dude! Well, that is less than ideal! First time in 28 years this has happened. Oh yeah, and I contacted my dealer 4 days ago, sent email with photos, and still no clear answer on possible cost. I was also told I needed an oil change ($110) every 6 months no matter how many miles I have on it (2,600 miles)...so, there's that, too. It just gets better and better. I figure this will be my last car, so I got what I wanted...starting to rethink my decision! LOL!

You do not need an oil change every 6 months, regardless of miles and it doesn't cost $110 either. What you need, is a new dealer.

It isn't the BS's fault mice are chewing. They are equal opportunity destruction critters.

That guy in the vid, tests all kinds of rodent traps and deterrents. He has a playlist called myth busters, on his youtube channel. Now, I haven't watched every single one but the only thing I'm seen him prove out as a deterrent, is that they really do not like mint oil.

I definitely will check other dealers and the owners manual AND my extended warranty on the oil change. It's synthetic oil apparently...I've never fallen for the extended warranty bit, but live and learn. Yeah, not feeling real smart right about now...

"Cornmint, Citronella, and Linseed. This special combination of essential oils smells fresh and minty to humans… but mice and rats take one whiff and run the other way."

This comes from a pest control outfit selling on line — www.bugmd.com

They have burlap pouches containing those oils; I haven’t tried them, but do use some of their other stuff and it works pretty well. I’ve no affiliation with the company, just thought I’d throw it out there.

No further damage to the filter, I’ll keep an eye before getting it replaced.
I also had a look under the bonnet to make sure there was no damage, that I could see anyway.

So glad no more damage! Here is a pic of "the nest"...we never could figure out where the "white stuff" came from...

Cool! Yeah...not into the whole DIY thing. I wish we were , but we're not that handy and living in the country takes lot of time and effort. This is much better...thanks!

Those 5 gallon buckets with a roller covered with peanut butter work very well. A couple of inches of water in the bottom make it impossible for them to get out.

I had a huge mouse problem in my garage. I was able to fix it with new door seals (the old ones had shrunk), and I adopted a feral cat. No mouse problems since.

We have rock squirrels here, and they are very destructive. My friend lives in southern NM and he has had good luck with flashing lights placed under the hood.

Off subject a little but still involving mice. A mouse somehow got in my home heat pump wiring on the side of the house. Mouse got across 220 volt connectors and fried. Burned to a crisp. Started a little fire and burned up the wiring in the heatpump. Heatpump was totaled. Home owners would not cover once I told them a mouse was involved. Guess I should have tried to blame it on lightning. Had rats around last summer. They stayed away from traps no matter how tempting the bait. I had motion camera watching. Last time I saw the offender he finally ran off with a poison bait which I hope he shared with family. I had to be extremely careful with baits because I have dogs around.

I think this is about how I feel...it feels like a big old boulder went thru my windshield or there's a big scratch or dent on my brand new Bronco, so it's somehow "tainted". So sorry about all that.

My buddy’s Porsche SUV had nesting birds in his grill twice. The most humorous discovery was when it went in to get serviced and the video shared by the service tech. He was morally weighing the best way to dispose of it as he was sharing the vehicle walk around.

Well, I still don't have my Pony, but did find a closer dealer to handle it at a reasonable price. He said his parents used to use "fox urine" to keep the mice away...so instead of smelling like "old people moth balls", they just stunk like fox urine...we had a really good laugh out of that one. I'll be back in the saddle on Thursday! YeeHaw!

I have searched and hopefully found the articles about these little rats, but they were mostly from 2022. Has anyone come up with better solution for keeping them out? Just got my brand new 2024 BS Big Bend in Sept 2024. Went to the store and engine light came on on way back...pulled over there was a nest and a vacuum hose chewed off. Damn! We live in the pine forest of East Texas, and don't have a garage. This is first new car in over 12 years...please offer some solutions, as we are desperate seniors (not dead yet)! Thanks gang!

Place some moth balls under the bonnet. Put three into three porous but water resistant pouches. Tie them in a couple of spots. It should ward off these forest critters. Worked for my 1988 BMW 735i trunk when mice and squirrels were getting in.

Thanks! I've got the Pony back! This dealer had the part in stock (even he was surprised since it was such a new model and new part) and had us out of there in an hour (no other wires damaged). I now have spearmint oil, peppermint oil, bounce dryer sheets, moth balls and anything else I can throw at it...the gun comes out next...LOL! So far, no mice, but we'll be checking daily. We're waiting for the kitten explosion that will be coming up in a month or so, and will be getting some hunters (hopefully). Living in a pine forest also means we have copperheads, water moccasins and other various and sundry snakes that have always been dispatched by our previous outdoor cats. Wish us luck!
