I happened to get a check engine light on the same day the dealership was coming out to take care of the drain tube recall with their mobile service.
Code was P0496 "Evaporative Emission System High Purge Flow".
The tech was able to diagnose it while taking care of the recall and get the part ordered. He then came back out a couple days later to install the part to make the repair.

Tech mentioned that this could cause the engine to not start or run rough when getting gas. I did not need to refuel while I was getting the CEL so I did not experience this.

The part needed was the "vapor management valve / canister purge valve"

The mobile service offered by the dealership really saved me a lot of time coming out to my work to get these jobs taken care of.

Hopefully this info can benefit someone in the future.

This is in central PA.
My local dealer doesn't offer it but the dealer a town over called and said that they saw my name on a list of vehicles that stilled need the recall completed. So I took advantage of it.
My local dealer still had me on a waiting list to get the parts needed for the recall.

Purge valves are like any other component; they can be defective from the factory. Another known cause of failure is overfilling the tank during refueling. The purge valve’s purpose is to direct vapors trapped in the evaporative canister to the cylinders to be burned off. Some owners like to top off by continuing to pump after the handle clicks off. If the tank gets full enough fuel can back up into the filler pipe far enough to get into the vent system and down to the canister. Do this enough and you can inundate the charcoal in the canister and allow raw fuel in the line going to the purge valve. This will eventually destroy both the canister and purge valve. Moral of the story is stop pumping after the first click.

Amen to the warning of "topping off" a fuel tank.

All good advice.
I do not overfill or not put the nozzle all the way into the filler neck.
I even wait the 5 seconds before removing the nozzle after filling is complete.

Unfortunately sometimes parts stop functioning properly.

I have the same code. Had it diagnosed and smoke checked. All valves were working. It has become an intermittent CEL that goes away. It will disappear for a month, then return. Then go away.

I will, but the shop I use talked to their Ford people and was told that they couldn't duplicate either and was just throwing parts at it until the CEL goes away.

When I was looking the code up I found that some Fords have issues with capless gas fill tube flap starting to not make a good seal on some occasions due to contaminants and will throw the same code.
There are some Youtube videos of people spraying some Seafoam onto the flap while working it in and out with the funnel supplied by Ford that you would use to add gas from a fuel can.

Thats nuts. I will have to see if the CEL corresponds in timing will getting gas. (It may but now I will have to clear the code and actively keep track)
