FYI that isn't the main ECU harness. The ECU and main connection are on the other side of that metal plate/bracket.

Some silicone fusion tape around the conductors may go a long way in making that connector better.

***EDIT***
Thank you to several members who have pointed out that was NOT the ECU, it is mearly a junction box. So I haven't moved the ECU at all.
The actual ECU is behind that metal plate and IS protected by a combination of a plastic compartment and then the wheel well liner.

Ok so its that other thing. But it still gets dunked under water at 23 inches right?

Right, those connections are generally safe from splash, but would be submerged during a slow water wade event. I'm still surprised this ECU got fried, as all those connections should be sealed against water intrusion. Ford did test for this sort of thing.

For people like me wondering if you have to remove the bumper to see the connector - just look at the opening on the drivers side where the tow hook it. Easily seen and pretty much exposed to anything coming in the hook opening. One can only hope those connectors are extremely well sealed as it is not an ideal place to put a major electrical connection. Even washing the car will get this connector very wet when hosing off the bumper.

To johnperrion, nice work on showing everyone the issues. Would be interesting to open the connector when ECU is replaced to see if water got into the connector. Looking at the location of the connector and exposure to outside I would not be surprised to see it shorted out which caused to ECU failure.

Thanks for the additional pictures! I am going to ask the dealer for pictures so we can compare.

It is going to be covered under warranty. So far they are replacing the MCU (main computer unit?) and the engine harness. Amazingly they found parts. Now I have to wait to see if anything else got toasted once MCU and harness are replaced. They are chalking it up to the connector not being sealed. You may all want to have the dealer take a look at your own MCUs to ensure the connector is correct before getting caught like I did.

Someone needs to figure out a good relocation for this. Wonder why Ford thought inside the wheel well was a good place for the ECU? Even if it’s sealed water tight, I don’t like the idea of it potentially being underwater at times. They did this but left that huge open space inside the fender on the drivers side, would’ve been high and dry there it seems.
