Um that be 20% ?OK, the Continental came with 8/32" tread depth and the Goodyear Forterra HL, with 10/32", so not a huge actual difference but still a 25% increase.
My move from my slick, hydroplaning 225 stock Conti’s to my 235 Yoko Geolandar GO15’s had me dropping the cold tire pressure one pound to 32 psi, for the best handling and tire road feel.
At my first 5k tire rotation my tread depth gage across the tires tells me I’m right with the psi.
On a sixty degree day once they reached operating temps they were 36 and 37 psi anyways.
This same tire in a larger size on my 2004 Ford Escape needs only 30 psi for proper tread wear and handling,
30 psi is on the Escape’s door plate for cold tire pressure. Odd until you think it through this larger size @ 30 cold they’d still get up to 35,36 hot, only one psi less than my Bronco sports cold setting of 32 psi. As for thinking it through,Our side walls are our tires cooling surface, radiator. Larger sidewalls dissipate more heat. I bet there are boat loads of data on that subject so let’s pass on this aspect.
I’ve had several other vehicles, from low profile Pony Cars and Camaro’s to Full height and raised F-150,s to 2x4 and 4x4 Toyota pick ups that needed three, four and even five psi over door data cold tire psi’s to handle and wear correctly.
OP, start at 32 for a week, let the tires break in and wear off the new tire chemicals,,, two weeks in the cold weather.
Then slowly go up just ONE single psi each week, ok skip the 33 and next go to 34 psi, then 35.
My Ford dealer likes to set tires, all tires at 35 to 36 psi saying we have lots of twisty roads and people don’t slow down enough to run door stated pressures.
Raising Center of gravity or changing roll out (Engine RPM vs tire revolutions per mile, gear ratio’s at a given speed) more than as little as possible is why I won’t go over/above a 235 tire on my Base model. Because I don’t want my little 1.5 L working harder than it needs to by changing the gear ratios or mounting inch heavier tires. Fwiw my 235’s weighed four pounds each more than the stock Conti’s.
Slow down , way down in the corners, always.
Play with your pressures, let those big comfy new shoes break in.
And remember to ponder all this on the ‘Tree of Woe’..
Sorry, just couldn’t help it :’P
