I noticed on a newer 2022 BS window sticker a new addition or feature to the BS. Is it really new? I bought a 2022 OB and it was not on my window sticker. Does anyone else have this active grille shutter? And what is it?

pretty sure this has been there since day 1. The window sticker is not an all inclusive list of what on the vehicle. Its just highlights based on current hot points.

From what I could find online, "Active Grille Shutters open and close automatically to control airflow, reducing aerodynamic drag and improve fuel efficiency." How can one tell if they have this system on their BS?

Look at the grille. In this case it is the lower grille and you should see “shutters” that can move.

Interesting. Don't think I've ever owned a vehicle with something like this. Does it shut during certain speeds?

I don't know how the ecu figures out when to open or close them. Sometimes when it's raining you'll notice some water get thrown up on to the hood. I think that's from the shutters moving.

I think the logic is tied to engine coolant temp but not 100% sure of that. So, if it is warm and you are in slow traffic they will be open but when on the highway cruising they can close.

It's a drag reduction measure. At highway speed the biggest factor affecting fuel economy is drag created by air resistance. The least amount of drag occurs when the air flows smoothly around the car without any turbulence. Any turbulence created by protuberances increases drag, and the increase is exponential with speed.

The radiator is essentially an air brake; air must be slowed going through it to allow heat transfer from the coolant. At slower speeds air must be forced through the radiator using either a fan or the movement of the car through the air. Forcing air through the radiator via vehicle movement creates drag, which isn't much of a problem at slower speed, but the drag increase is exponential with speed, and at highway speeds can have a significant effect on fuel economy. Some bright boy or girl found, however, at highway speeds there is enough air flowing around inside the engine compartment to facilitate heat transfer without forcing air from the opening in the grill. So closing the grill shutters takes the radiator out of the air flow, thereby reducing overall drag and increase fuel economy.

That's the theory, anyway. How effective they are at improving economy in the real world is a subject of some debate.

Anyone have a picture of what these look like? Is it the actual grill itself that closes or something behind the grill you can't really see?
