A Poll for Science - How big of a role does dealer size play in delivery time?

How big is the dealership you ordered from and how long did it take to recieve your order?

Hi folks. I'm an ecologist by trade, so naturally I have to question the Bronco Sport ordering process just as I would anything else - With the scientific method! This is a poll to find out how much influence the size of a dealership plays in custom ordered Bronco Sport manufacturing and delivery time. Please answer this poll if you have custom ordered a Bronco Sport and have already recieved your order.

For the purposes of this poll, dealership size may be slightly subjective. "Large" dealerships refer to dealerships who recieve a high amount of volume and may be located in major cities or metropolitan areas. "Medium" dealerships refer to those who may be in towns with a population base around 100,000 people and receive a medium amount of volume. "Small" dealerships are just that - The Ford dealerships operating in small towns whose customers are primarily those in just that area who may not recieve and sell as many vehicles as medium or large dealerships.

The average Bronco Sport order fulfillment time seems to take anywhere from 3 to 9 months. I have used 4 months as a median timeline. Anything less than 4 months is considered to be a speedy delivery, anything more than 4 months may be slower than average. The factors contributing to delivery speed are numerous (and possibly unknown), so a large sample size from this poll may help to clarify the role of dealership size/allocation related to order fulfillment.

Thank you for your contribution to science!

I’ve been wondering the same thing. My dealership is not a big one, and everything went through as timely as it could with the exception of delivery. In terms of order placed, production etc, no issues, actually it was pretty quick considering the timelines I see on here.

Mine is over 4 months to even get to production. I assume that’s due to chip shortage factors since I ordered everything but the moonroof on my BL. But those factors (trim, options, etc.) should average out with a large enough sample size in your poll. Thanks for asking an interesting question!

Now as far as dealer size goes, I’m assuming mine counts as a ā€˜large’ dealer given the city is at least 1.3 million (I can google estimates up to 1.6). In addition, I’d expect an average dealer customer base and therefore allocation as there aren’t particularly any more Ford dealerships in the city vs. other mainstream brands. A quick google shows 8 Chrysler, 7 Ford, 6 each Toyota, GM & Nissan, with 5 Honda & 5 Hyundai.

There’s also nothing in particular to suggest Ford might sell fewer vehicles than anyone else thereby lowering allocations, since they’re topping this list.

Now having said that here, individual dealers repping more than one brand aren’t particularly common, but most are part of a larger conglomerate which may include multiple stores of different brands. My dealership is part of one which includes two ford stores in the city (and 1 in a bedroom community), in addition to a couple other brands, used lots, body shop, & credit lender. So does anyone know, lets say this group here has ā€˜average’ sales at each of 3 Ford stores. And compare to one theoretical individual store that has superior sales. If each store stands alone, you’d expect average allocations, so I don’t believe that’s delaying any on my end. But. For arguments sake, if you’d ordered at a superior sales store, but individually owned, could you be overshadowed by the ā€˜bigger’ guy who just happens to have more locations rather than more sales from one location? Not sure I’ve explained that well.

The other variable is the vehicle itself - some options/ features may be more readily available to higher volume sellers....
Like I mentioned, there are many factors that influence fulfillment. I know for a fact the chip shortage plays a huge role, and I've seen firsthand that certain trims are produced more quickly than others. I'd just like to see via this poll if dealership size and allocation might play a significant role. Things like this keep me busy while I wait for my Badlands. ?

I was thinking that the spreadsheet thread with the tracking etc missed a big opportunity to gather more data for everyone. Imagine if that sheet had spots for all the dates that come during the process, spots for filling in what options each person ordered, and a spot for dealer size (with maybe some way of determining what size your dealer is).

An intersting variable to me is size of dealership…and size of metro area.

Im in San Diego and while my dealership is small, the SD metro area is about the 8th biggest in terms of population in the country.

We’re also very close to LA and OC. And frankly if it weren’t for Camp Pendleton the two areas would’ve merged by now.

I wonder if metro area size is a bigger determinant as metro area size could infer greater demand and sales for an area and take higher priority.

There is definitely some biases. For example, I wanted everything in my Outer Banks but after reading posts here, I excluded the sunroof to avoid delays.

We were told it would be 3-4 months from a larger dealership in the city we live in. We found the exact one we were going to order on the lot of a smaller dealership in a town of 4000 people just a 2 hour drive away from us. Drove to the town, had dinner with my parents and brought it home the next day. Saved close to $8000 as well.

Yeah my metro area is only like... 1.5million people? But the dealership I chose to order with has 28 dealerships across Maryland and Virginia, with 6 of those being Ford dealerships. I picked them vs a more "local" dealership (with 4 locations) if only because my assumption was that their overall volume is going to be much MUCH higher.

It is not rocket science peoples.
There is one single que for special orders.
We all ā€œGet In Lineā€
Now your number comes up as next. But they are behind and or out of stock on certain parts that will allow the plant to complete your vehicle to the point of shipping ready.
Your vehicle gets moved out of that que to a holding list.
Simple programming on a computer somewhere.
The parts become available and your vehicle gets back in line Behind the current, ā€œTooled Up Status of the lineā€.
There is no pattern to wait line time.

I would think the dealer satisfaction scores even play a role. Ford also instituted something recently about the percent of bronco orders placed were not going to the orderer and if they failed to maintain some percentage they could lose allocations

I like this Data, Charts, Spreadsheets! I can't contribute yet, but shaping up to being a good case study! Commenting so I can find this when I can add my data / .02

You don’t know any more about this process than anyone else. There are examples in this forum that contradict your ā€œtheoryā€ of how the process works. There is some accuracy in your description but there are clearly more factors than just your place in line and the availability of parts to build vehicles.
