Is MSRP still considered a fair market price?

Now that the auto market seems to have cooled down a little, just wondering if people are finding MSRP a fair market price, or if people are starting to get deals below MSRP yet? And if so, by how much?

I have a BSOB on order that will probably deliver in a few weeks. I have access to X-Plan which takes $1056 off MSRP, was well as caps dealer handling fees at $100 which will save me another $475. Plus it shows another $1000 Customer Cash (#90006), although at present it only shows that for June. Hoping that renews for July too.

I'm probably getting the best deal with X-Plan, but just wanted to check and see if people are finding the market getting soft enough to get much off MSRP via negotiation like the old days.

That would depend largely on your area. My neighbor is a finance manager at a kia dealer and they are still struggling to have more than 10 cars on the lot at a time so they are pricing them accordingly.

I think we are still a ways off of norm.

I'm in Colorado, like you. The market is still pretty hot for desirable vehicles. Getting MSRP is do-able if you shop around and are patient. Most dealerships will sell at MSRP, some even a bit under if you custom order as you have done. I think you're in a good spot with your x-plan pricing, especially if you get the extra customer cash.

Also Ford policy is that you qualify for any incentives that were active at the time of your order and were offered after, up to the time you take delivery. So save that customer cash offer as it should be honored for you.

Higher interest rates and increasing production/inventory are starting to soften the market, but we're not there yet. We're past the insane $10K markups on common vehicles, but definitely not to where Joe Consumer can walk into a dealership and pick what he wants and negotiate 10% off. I also don't expect the days of big year-end selloffs and other such discounts to ever come back. Automakers don't want that. We're going to be seeing a lot more in terms of restricted inventory and higher pricing for what's on the lot for the just gotta have it now customers and most everyone else will order what they want. That's what Ford, GM, Toyota and others all want to do. They're trying to move to online ordering vs. regional managers that try to guess what customers want.

That was pretty much my read on it too, but just wanted to see if others were finding better deals in the last few months.

Unfortunately that $1000 customer cash wasn't in effect when we ordered the car in April. It just popped up for June, probably reflecting the market softening some. Seems like a decent chance it'll get renewed for July though (market about the same and getting late in the model year). But even if not, X-Plan still makes it a decent deal.

I'm probably wrong, but I believe on a retail order you have to order it with xplan price to get that price upon delivery.

For me, MSRP was theoretically the no BS price, which lasted right until I saw they charged for nitrogen and "paint protection." That was the part of the process where I was told to calm down and given an accessories credit for the cost.

I think both the manufacturers and dealers have seen they can make as much or more profit with limited inventory. The manufacturers don't have to throw out huge rebates and the dealers don't have to discount deeply.

So far as the BS goes, It will be interesting to see what the increased production at the Hermasillo plant does to retail prices. If the supply of inventory is just a hair more than the demand, prices can drop sharply.

My local Ford dealer has a bunch of Bronco Sports in stock so they're probably reasonably priced.

Local dealer is trying to get rid of the 2022 Bronco Sports that they have on the lot, pricing them $2500 below MSRP. It probably works out as a zero net loss as the 2023 models they have are $2-3K higher in MSRP.

When I bought my truck in 2019, it was pretty easy to beat X-Plan. Today, it's still not back to that level. For current-year models, prices are at or very near MSRP. X-Plan is the best deal I've seen locally and anecdotally ... so, it's worth the $35 to get X-Plan for those of us without corporate access.

In Canada X-plan can be applied to any vehicle ordered or on the dealers lot. The dealer does not have to participate in the plan though.

Your dealer most likely has the 2022's around because they were marked up 2.5K over MSRP. Now they have them cut down, only to go through it again with their 2023's marked up.

It's getting awfully late in the model year to still have 2022's around. From a resale value/depreciation standpoint, they pretty much have to be valued less at this point relative to the 2023's. It the buyer tries to resell the vehicle in a few years, they'll generally get less for a 2022 than a 2023 as well.

Just ordered my Badlands at MSRP. Because it is an order Ford is giving $1000 bonus cash so $1,000 under MSRP because of ordering it. Just received an email from Ford that the bonus cash was approved and provided a certificate number. No rebates on dealer inventory. Also no Badlands and minimal other Bronco Sport trims in dealer inventory.

For $35, you can buy that same BL with the X-Plan and still get the $1,000 bonus ... so, $1,000 under X-Plan.

As mentioned above, a given dealership does not have to participate in X-Plan pricing, but there are so many dealerships out there that the X-Plan should always be the worst deal anyone ever gets.

I've never heard of this dealer and know nothing about them, but this was included in the same email (from bsforum) as your thread:
https://www.broncosportforum.com/forum/threads/order-your-2023-bronco-sport-today-for-2-under-factor-invoice.9023/

Not as good as Granger's previous offer (6% under invoice) but no deposit required.

Granger has a good rep. The reasons we decided to buy locally (MSRP - $1,000 for ordering) were a) Granger is 1,000 miles from our house, and b) concerns about warranty coverage.

Those concerns were/are based on past experiences with multiple dealers as well as numerous articles and forum posts over the years. Dealers make significantly less for parts and labor for warranty work. There are also mfr requirements like returning old parts to the factory that can be seen as a PITA. Needless to say, not all dealers have an aversion to performing warranty (or recall) work on a vehicle they did not sell, some may even be happy to do it, but many of them definitely try their best to avoid it. It's a common problem.

The BS (esp. the BL with the 2.0L) is said to be very reliable, so there's a good chance we will not need to go back to our local dealer, but if we do there will (hopefully) be less of a possibility of being jerked around.

In any case, you're probably better off staying with your local dealer -- unless you know that they have no problem with warranty/recall work. Then maybe look around. There are deals out there.
