Has anyone had an issue with their 2020+ Bronco Sport experiencing sudden and catastrophic Engine failure? Took the grandkids to a movie Saturday night, Sunday morning my engine seized up. Had it towed to local Ford dealership. They told me the engine is locked up, water in the oil. $14,000 engine replacement, and sorry about your luck, "You're 2,700 miles outside of warranty." Dealership said there's nothing they can do. Ford customer service said there's nothing they can do. They also said they are not going to look into why the engine seized. (unless I want to pay an additional $1,500 for the privilege.....Any insights or suggestions?

Try and see if you can source a used engine off of a wrecked vehicle and see what a third party shop will charge you to install it. If it is out of warranty, the dealer isn't going to eat the cost if the manufacturer denies to cover it. It really sucks, but other than taking it to another shop and getting a second opinion, there isn't much more I can think of in terms of a recommendation.

Sounds like a Head Gasket or Cylinder Head problem if water was in the oil.

That's what I'm looking into. Ford's recommendation was NEW Engine, Turbo and Intake Manifold. I'm looking at re-man or low mileage used.

This is a known issue. I wouldn't give in to Ford yet. They do curtsy adjustments often. Escalate your conversation within Ford customer service. Also, make sure that your dealer is working with Ford through their contacts. 2700 miles out of warranty is nothing.

Low mileage used engine installed by a competent shop is your best bet. Plenty of good engines out there in wrecking yards from wrecked BS. A couple of thousand and you're done.

Went through dealer. Sorry - SOL "you're out of warranty"
Went through Ford Customer Service, same response.
Ford Service gave me no avenue to escalate. Dealership is trying.
Bottom line, if you're not the original owner, and you don't own other Ford products, they're not going to help.... (warranty)

Yup, just 2,700 over warranty mileage....

Where do you recommend Ford draw the line? 2700, 3200, 4000? What are your thoughts?

Agreed. It’s a set mileage warranty, not a set mileage +10-20%.

I’d still try to push them, based on all the known issues the earlier models had, but don’t be surprised when they continue to deny warranty. 😕

The line is drawn on whatever is included in the price of the vehicle you paid for. When a "stealership" offers a client and extended warranty and they decline it and something like this happens, the responsibility of repairs falls on the owner at 100%. A $3k warranty seems expensive until something like this happens. I am a dealer employee and I bought an extended warranty for both of my vehicles. There is tremendous value in extended warranties if the plan is long term ownership. I've never understood why consumers feel the manufacturer or dealer needs to pay for things outside the warranty period. It's only in the automotive industry that this expectation exists.

All IMO, of course. Maybe my opinion is biased since I work at a dealer, but the truth is, if you buy a TV from Best Buy and it takes a crap 2 months after the one year manufacturer warranty expires, no one expects Best Buy to fix it for free; yet people feel the auto dealer should. It's nonsensical and just doesn't happen in the real world unless the manufacturer assumes the cost as a goodwill gesture (which is rare in any industry).

Edit: By quoting you, I am not calling you out specifically. Just making a general comment.

No one expects a catastrophic $14,000 engine failure just miles after the warranty expires. If the dealership offered an extended warranty, I may have taken it. Problems happen after warranty, I get that, but your expectation is that your vehicle will last more than 60,000 miles. Non repairable!. Also had the car in for service just 8 weeks prior for engine problems. Dealership checked codes and test drove it, no problems found. 8 weeks later my engine is toast. Related? Don’t know. Don’t think they even looked under the hood. Also, if dealerships haven’t set the president of helping customers this close to end of warranty, I could live with that too. I retired from the auto industry and I know they do that. ( even though it might not be at 100%). And, oh yeah, it seems to be a known problem. Water pump, ok, A/C unit ok, coil pack ok. All repairable. Catastrophic, junk the car, problem after 4 years, not ok. And by the way, I’ve dealt with many companies that have gone out of their way to help customers out of warranty.

Did you have an overheating event recently, where the engine overheated while driving? You really haven’t given us much history as to why the engine failed.

There is almost always an issue that occurs that creates a situation like this.

Expectations and reality are not the same thing. If you worked in the auto industry, I should not have to elaborate on this. I also find it hard to believe that you were not offered extended warranty when you bought it since service contracts are a huge revenue stream for dealers. I am not a heartless a**hole.....I emptathize with your situation and it sucks. I would have loved to hear that Ford is covering at least a portion of it under goodwill. However, I am not surprised to hear that they are not.

Best of luck with your situation; I sincerely mean that.

These are just throw away cars made to fail so you have to go buy another throw away car. Nothing lasts these days. I'm coming up on two years old with 4775 miles on the ticker.
