Sorry if this has been ask but when accelerating with the 1.5 when do you feel the power kick in. If you do!. I have a 2.3 Ranger and It really starts to pull in 4th gear. That seems to be when the turbo is spun up enough to make itself known. Any thoughts. regards Jeff

I couldn’t tell you what gear since my cluster doesn’t show the gear it’s on. Seems to pull the most midrange. I wish there was a way to manually select gears.

If you want acceleration with the 1.5, drive in sport mode, it helps.

Sport mode helps with throttle response but pedal to the floor acceleration is the same.

While on the highway I can notice the power increase while passing another vehicle, if the RPMs are at highway cruising speed it definitely pulls at 70-80 mph. Not bad for a 1.5L.

When I first got my escape with the 1.5 I was skeptical. But after driving it I was honestly surprised at the power. The old Escape 2009, with the NA 2.5 or even the 3.0 engines back in the day were absolute dogs. The V6 was smooth but the lack of gears held those back. These new 8 speed transmissions really help. The problem is you have zero control over it. Even in the L selection it just guesses what you want.

A review of this thread--especially the chart in the first post--may answer your questions. The black lines in the chart represent horsepower and torque curves for OEM tuning: the solid line is horsepower and the dashed line is torque. Torque is what accelerates a vehicle at lower RPM, so that's the number you are interested in. Ford's EcoBoost engines are renowned for producing significant torque at low RPMs. This is owing to design features that reduce turbocharger spool up time.

The chart tells you that in stock form the 1.5L engine produces near-maximum torque at around 2200 RPM, with torque production remaining nearly constant to just under 4000 RPM. After 4k RPM, torque slowly falls from maximum to approximately 60% of maximum at redline RPM.

Thanks all for the feedback. Want to know if the onramp and passing a semi chops are there.

Read this review by Car & Driver. Relevant spec is 0-60mph time of 8.2 seconds. C&D times for the RAV4, Subaru Crosstrek, and the Nissan Rogue are 8.4, 8.3, and 7.8 respectively. Based on that, it appears the Bronco Sport with a 1.5L is right in the ballpark for vehicles in its class.

A lot of people seem to believe higher octane fuel (91) doesn't make a difference.
Yes, we all know the owners manual says the BS is designed to run on 87 octane fuel, it also says for maximum performance use 91 octane fuel.

I can feel the difference using 91 octane in my Badlands as well as in my Mercedes.

If you haven't tried it already, maybe it will help a little more in your case.

Yeah mine a lot stronger running 93 octane. But for the ppl who don't care or don't think it matters I recommend they run 87 octane.

Hello Jeff,

The 1.5L turbo is a great little engine. Its smaller turbocharger will make its peak torque way down in the rev range to get you moving from a stop and lower speeds. It won't, however, give you the same shove you experience in the Ranger, unless you upgrade the tune on the 1.5.

Like many above have said, driving in SPORT mode helps with throttle response and makes it feel less sluggish. You'll notice less response in ECO mode, where the goal is to get the best fuel mileage, but not best throttle response. If you compare the two modes, you should notice the difference in how the power comes on.

In another thread, you will see on the dyno run that Ford really set up the 1.5 BS for consistent power throughout the rpm range in stock form. The lowest dyno pull line is in stock 87-octane trim, and makes its 150+whp between 4600 all the way to 6000. Smooth is what we think they were going for, so it may be tough to "feel the power kick in" overall. Hope this helps!

Driving anything with that 1.5l engine, is like driving a go cart! LoL just saying. Had that engine in an Escape and hated it. 2.0l is the way to go!!!

You'll notice turbo lag more in ECO mode, where the goal is to get the best fuel mileage, but not best throttle response.
It's not turbo lag, it's lower throttle response coupled with changes to the shift pattern at lower power demand. You can easily prove this by putting the accelerator pedal on the floor; it will accelerate the same no matter what drive mode you are using.
