There was some humming in the beginning but not anymore I have put 7k on them and they are great tires. No big change in acceleration, I lost half a mpg

How is the road noise, handling on pavement?

Road noise is a bit more than stock but not obnoxious. My wife doesn’t notice. Handling is the same on pavement.

How important is it to try to get aftermarket wheels that are hub-centric like stock? (Which limits the wheel selection severely.)

If I get normal wheels, do I need to get an adapter ring?

As long as the hub center on the wheel is larger than the one on the BS, you can get "hub centric rings" that will adapt between the 2 sizes. The hub centric part is very important to get the wheel/hub aligned. I don't know what changed over the years to make this a "must-have" now as they used to rely on the lugs/lug nuts to align the wheel/hub. I have run wheels for a short time without the hub centric rings and it's not a good thing. Makes it feel like a wheel is out of balance.
