That's ridiculous to require a deposit. Bronco Sports are in such high demand that if you didn't want the custom order, many other people will. The dealership isn't going to lose anything. My sales guy even told me that! That's just not very professional.
Yeah ours didn't require one either for just that reason but I was willing to pay one as long as it went towards the vehicle had it been. Mark up though I would not have been cool with

I drove out there to O’Fallon in the ice storm last month. Before the salesman even opened his computer app he explained how they just don’t make money on Bronco Sports and it would be $4000 over MSRP. After seeing they had none I left. I could almost hear them laughing at me when I slid my way off the lot.
Check out Granger Motors in Granger Iowa. 6% under invoice! Doesn’t get much better.

$4k over MSRP and they are not making money? Doesn’t sound like they know how to run a business.

Sounds like a lie to con the gullible. Which it is. My dealer made money at employee pricing (A-Plan), albeit a lot less than the sleazy dealers insisting on $4-10k over MSRP.

Dealers where I live want $4000 or more over MSRP and $500 non refundable down payment to "lock" the car for you (they will no longer offer it to anyone else to buy).

So I have two undelivered Bronco Sports VIN's "locked" at two dealerships.
  1. Bronco Sport 1 from Dealer 1 [BadLands ordered by dealer months ago and is "built"] is probably in a parking lot in Hermillos. Dealer 1 charged my credit card $500 to promise not to sell it to anyone else. I am praying it has the Assist+ chip (so they can put it on the train).
  2. Bronco Sport 2 from Dealer 2 [Outer Banks ordered by dealer months ago and is "built" and on a train] has left Hermillos. Dealer 2 charged my credit card $500 to promise not to sell it to anyone else.
I will be out only one of the $500 downpayments when one of the dealers receives "my" vehicle

This is a crazy market for sure. (No I am not paying $4000 over sticker). Paying an extra $500 to go around the custom order process is worth it to me..

Regarding "ownership". (from what I read online for my state) Assuming you are financing, the second you sign the loan document with the finance manager you "own" the car. You are sitting there in a room.. but legally you just drove it off the lot so to speak.

[So.. no I didn't buy it.]
All dealers are not that way. I ordered in Oct 21, no deposit, no dealer add on's, x-plan, $1K for rebate (for ordering) got exactly what I wanted - arrived at dealer 1/29/22.
Very easy, good dealer experience.

Yep. I picked up a BSBB that just hit a local dealer's lot the Saturday prior. The dealer honored A-Plan (employee pricing), the only thing added was a set of wheel locks for like $60 which I'm okay with, and sadly there were no rebates (no $1k custom order bonus cash) as I needed to replace a totaled car ASAP. No upsells, the advertised price was what I paid. Also have an Escape on order with no deposit required. That one will have the $1k and other incentives, also on A-Plan, and anticipate a similarly easy process.

Sucks that some dealers are less than honest, fair, reasonable.

Ordered mine at Machens in Columbia Mo. No deposit, msrp less 1000. Special order bonus cash. 249. doc fee. Even got a decent trade in value but will probably sell outright.

Sorry, but I don’t see the issue. Even in today’s hot housing market you need to put down escrow. If you are really planning to buy it, why not put some skin in the game? I think that has been the issue with the full size Bronco. You could reserve one for $100 completely refundable. Many reserved two. With a little more skin in the game, I think it reduces the tire kickers. My opinion only. I had no issue putting a little money down. Shows faith and no shenanigans at time to pick up either.
I haven't even drove a Bronco Sport yet- there were none in my area so why would I put down a deposit on a vehicle, I haven't seen- let alone sit in and drive? It's the dealerships who are changing standard protocols. Knowing directly from the salesperson that it is not how the dealership should be doing business leads me to believe it's less than scrupulous dealers who are doing it.

If the order process changes in the future and all dealerships play by the same rules, then I'd certainly adapt. I guess I am lucky to have a great dealership (Varsity Ford- Ann Arbor, MI).

I guess I was referring to ordering one. To be honest, I haven’t sat in one or drove one but then again I’ve ordered many vehicles that way. Maybe it helps that I’m of average size. The only vehicle I ever had that really wasn’t comfortable on long drives was my ‘95 Lightning. Was designed for a guy 5’6” I think. Sat up too straight and the seat belt dug into my neck. But it was a blast to drive as long as it wasn’t cross country. Other than that, I’ve never really had an issue. The BS BL is replacing a 16 year old Escape. I expect it to feel about the same. I ordered the Escape as well since no dealership had manual transmission ones in stock or on order.

If there are concerns about how it drives or feels, I agree, I would not order one until I drove it.

Freeway Ford CO. The dealer ordered units they sell for a 3k mark up. But place a order and it's MSRP, no add ons. Standard CO doc fee of 500. Minus any incentives. We are getting the 1k for ordering, and X-Plan pricing. Ask for Jordan and say Ryan sent you.

I am surprised to hear about all the differences between dealerships. The first one I went to took my order for invoice price. They wanted a refundable $500 deposit. Sadly, they were unable to submit the order ("due to parts shortages").

I stopped at another dealer the same day who took the order with no deposit and successfully submitted it the same day with all the things.

this. My dealer said if you decide you don’t want it, don’t get it. We need the inventory! I paid nothing.

will buy at MSRP.

I should’ve ordered and bought 2. Kept one and flipped one.
My dealer was the same.

From what I've seen for resale, the lower trims net a higher profit.

Used market doesn't seem to command more for higher option higher trims. Prob cause used car buyers don't understand or care about differences. Average used car buyer a Bronco Sport is a Bronco Sport they all look about the same lump them all into one category apparently....

My how things change in a year, last year I stopped in to the Ford dealer to look at the Bronco, of course none available just Bronco Sports. I said "sure I'll test drive one", did and liked it. There was several on the lot, Base, Big Bend, and Outer Banks, the Big Bend fit my needs so I bought it. I get no Ford discounts but I got $1500 off sticker and $500 from Ford credit, I couldn't imagine having to pay an additional $4000 or more for the same vehicle today. I hope to see this chip shortage end soon because I miss looking at several choices at different dealers before I would buy something new.
