Also. What if you don't already have glass coverage? That's a $500 deductible in most states

Only ordered the OB package for the B&O sound system, didn't really need the moonroof. I have only opened the moonroof on my '16 F150 once since I have owned it. The OB package without the moonroof was $600 less.

yeah I don't mean to salt the wound...yet another reason I specifically chose no badlands package, no moonroof. It's a pretty thing, but wrought with options to fail. leaks, cracks, malfunctions which I've had happen with the only moon roof I owned. Swore it off never again. Ford should still make this right.
My roof imploded on my brand new car 250 mile on it , it was in a million pieces may 15 2010 ,cool morning 75 degrees going 70 mph on interstate, dealership covered. That glass in that bronco would kill someone in a major accident. I am going out and look at the safety sticker on my roof . This needs to be looked into for everyone’s safety.

Oh zero doubt. My main point was, as random as it was...hard to tell exactly what happened. A dealer will typically try to avoid any responsibility which is nuts...they just pass it on to Ford and that's a bad look discrediting a customer. They SHOULD take the glass and examine what happened before it's the next tire roll over lawsuit

I agree , it should have been examined by a Glass specialist , what or who that would be is the question.

It almost looks like the glass was made without the laminate inner layer that's supposed to hold the glass together in the event of a break.

I was wanting the B&O system, and would have paid dearly for it on a Big Bend had Ford offered it Ă  la carte, but I ended up going with the Outer Banks + OB pkg (no moonroof). Not a moonroof fan either.

Causes of Sunroof Explosions | Glass.com
An interesting article on sunroof glass explosions, anybody know if the BS has a tempered or laminated moonroof?
Good article, thanks for posting, although reading about entire sunroofs departing moving vehicles gives me another concern when riding motorcycles. :surprised:

Interesting that the article mentioned Ford as having some issues:

A recent lawsuit against Ford claimed that while some car makers utilize laminated glass, Ford has chosen to use tempered glass in its sunroofs. They also suggest that Ford uses “thinner glass … [which increases] the probability of catastrophic failure.”

well this is somewhat concerning....though this is the first one we are aware of. if this becomes epidemic like the Ford Edge a few years ago, then there might be something to say about there being a flaw in the manufacturing process of the moonroof. The aspect of the moonroof being unavailable for the rest of the year due to shortages is reason to be suspicious because aside from a shortage of them, we do not know why there is a shortage of them. Covid was a good excuse for this, time will tell if this is not the case.
I have had chestnuts hit the panoramic moonroof on my Escape and was traumatized by the sound and impressed it held up with no damage.

rock chips can be strange too. I live in a mountainous area and drove though where a rockslide had recently happened. Had a sprinkling of fine rocks hit the windshield from the car ahead and the windshield just spidered from multiple super-tiny stone chips, yet have also had large rocks bounce off the windshield with no damage.

in any event, glad insurance covered it and you are ok. Tempered glass can be a finicky thing....

But if you haven't already, DO REPORT IT DIRECTLY TO FORD. Bypass the dealer and call up FORD directly to have the case logged, that way it can be tracked in case this is something that does become more widespread.

Had Sun/Moon roofs on most of my cars and never had an issue like that. Ordered mine with the OB package and looking forward to enjoying sun and moon while I drive!

By the time I ordered my OB the moonroof was not available for the rest 2021 model year due to "shortages".

I was thinking the same thing. There was moonroof shortage a while back causing production delays. Wonder if this issue could be due to them switching to different supplier. Pure speculation though.
My BL was in production for nine weeks during the moonroof/tow shortage. It went into production on December 2 and left the plant on February 1. I was very nervous about it sitting around in a storage yard half built. It also arrived at the dealer with chips along the edge of the back window, scraped/scuffed/gouged rocker panel and 75 unexplained kms on the odometer.
