My buddy has a 2009 escape and we were talking about fluid changes in the ptus and the transmissions and everything and he sent me this link cuz I'm at 32,000 miles and I was telling him I was going to be doing my transmission soon and I didn't realize it but our transmissions you can't change the filter. So like the guy says in this video he does a lot of good videos and has good advice. We want to be changing our transmission fluid every 30,000 because you have to split the case to change the transmission filter and so you don't want to Gunk it up and it's an easy process. It's basically the same as my old escape with the 6 f-35. It's just ridiculous that Ford does this dumb stuff like these lifetime fuel filters too. I think in like 2011 they just stopped putting in fuel filters that you can change. It's so dumb But anyways, here's the link to the video

Thank you for this. When it's time for mine to be done I'll look at it closer, but as an old school guy who has changed fluids in many manual transmissions, I might try filling it thru that leveling port with a pump. That avoids taking off anything up top. Such plugs on manual transmissions are the only way to fill AND determine the correct volume of fluid.

I'm wondering whether anyone has investigated adding an external (spin-on) oil filter for the transmission. There's not a heck of a lot of real estate to work with from what I can see, but where there's a will.....

I have an external filter setup on my E4OD (97 F250 Diesel). It uses a 22-micron filter and the filter base has a built-in bypass valve (note that this is different than a bypass filter) to ensure the trans still gets fluid flow should a filter get plugged. You would also want to ensure that the transmission pump could supply enough of a fluid rate with a filter (both clean and dirty). Not sure if the flow rate is specified anywhere outside of the engineers that designed it. Cheers!

For those of you that have done a fluid change, how many quarts did you have to re-add?

Pretty nice video, but he neglected to tell us how to determine when the trans is at the correct temp range. Can that info be accessed anywhere on the DIC? Our Jeep shows it if you dig into the menus.

As I don't have a lift, I use ramps. I know the ramps will effect the accuracy in using the leveling port to a degree, but would it be to the point of being a concern ?

Yes. I would jack it up, remove the shield, drain the fluid, remove the left front wheel, remove the leveling plug, replace the drain plug and gently lower the left front to level that side of the vehicle.

So it's been a while. I don't remember the exact amount but it it was basically almost exactly what the guide says. It should be like 4.2 quarts or whatever. I think it was is what came out of mine. It was just a bit over 4 quarts
