I just bought a 2023 Bronco Sport Badlands trim model with 2400 miles on it. Love the car but I am only averaging 17.8 mi in the city. What's going on???? That's not anywhere near the 21 miles cited by Ford. Anybody have any ideas of why my gas mileage is so poor? The vehicle is stock with no additional racks. Otherwise I love the car. I'm just really disappointed with the poor gas mileage.

What type of driving are you doing? It’s not really great in stop and go traffic especially if you are heavy on the skinny pedal. In the winter it tends to go down but being in San Diego, I wouldn’t expect that to be the reason. You are also just barely broken in and you might want to give it a bit. Also, the computer isn’t all that accurate. Are you measuring by hand or based on the computer? You really want to check it and average over several fill ups.

Hi. Thanks for the quick response. I just got the car and have not driven it far. I am still getting to know the car so I probably have had it idle more than usual playing with all the controls. Some say you get better mileage with premium gas. I also read it may need more of a break-in period. I am just going off the computer so I will manually keep a log and see how I do over the next few weeks. I have a poll out there to see how many Bronco owners are getting the advertised MPG so that will be interesting. I knew they were not the best at fuel efficiency, but under less than 18 MPG... that is terrible.

2022 Badlands (in service 1/25/2022):

March 2024 I experienced an unexpected drop in gas mileage, thought was due to high average daytime as well as nighttime temps corresponding with high use of air conditioning however the drop in temps since Nov 2024 has not consistently returned gas mileage back to the 23.5 mph range I had with city driving prior to March 2024. Or I thought maybe the mpg drop was due to the summer fuel blend changeover but also since probably September or October that summer fuel blend is gone.

In March 2024, my Badlands was still factory stock (Pirelli 225 65R17 tires, EFB (battery), was prior to Recall 24S24 BCM/PCM Programming, was prior to replacing EFB with AGM Battery summer 2024).

I calculate the fuel mileage myself and keep a record for each fill up as well as long term average. Since March 2024, I have a number of fill ups that show an mpg range between high 17’s and mid-19 mpg which I had not experienced before March 2024.

At this point I’m still unsure what has caused the drop in mpg starting March 2024.
THat is a massive bummer. I polled the forum regarding who is getting the advertised MPG so that should be interesting. I wonder if there is any recourse when your car is still under warranty for getting poor mileage.? That seems to me to be either faulty advertising or a warranty issue.

MPG is so highly dependent on the driver, there would have to something measurably wrong with the car, for an mpg shortfall to be covered under warranty.

So far, we're getting not quite 22, on 87 octane Tier 1 fuel, with mixed, highway / city driving but it is creeping up, as break in continues.

Drive it for a while and try to keep track mentally of your driving habits. You can also change your display to show the boost pressure. Keeping the turbo in boost is hard on your gas milage. I tend to drive my 2 door more in the summer and generally average around 20mpg with that which I’m pretty happy with. I drive the sport during the winter and it’s a bit harder on the gas milage then.

Unfortunately 2021-2024 Bronco Sports do not come with a boost gauge

Sorry, maybe thats only on the full size. You can do similar by putting the active gas milage monitor on. It’s not as sensitive or easy to understand as the boost guage but will give you a sense of the impact between a heavy foot and gas milage.

The point being is you can affect your gas milage despite what others are saying. I doubt there is anything “wrong” with your Sport.

If doing strictly city driving my Badlands will usually get into the 18-19mpg range, this is stop and go city traffic conditions.
On the open highway it will match or better the EPA rating depending on speed.
