Update

Over the past 3-4 months, I have been experiencing a stumbling issue. This occurs all the time between 25 and 45 mph under light to moderate throttle. When under hard throttle, the issue does not appear. There has also been a rhythmic surge at highway speeds. The tachometer would jump every second while driving.

My 21 OB has 117,000+ miles. The spark plugs were changed at 105,000. I cleaned the MAF, mass airflow sensor; the MAP, manifold absolute pressure sensor and the IAT, intake air temperature sensor. I used MAF cleaner on all three. I did not see any visible debris or discoloration. The engine air filter is clean.

Three weeks ago, while out of town, an MIL appeared on the dash (check engine light). I pulled into an O’Reilly Auto Parts. They read the code as P3402, cylinder deactivation solenoid. When arriving back, I had the dealer order and replace the cylinder deactivation solenoid.

After picking the vehicle up, the issue remained. I again dropped the vehicle off to be diagnosed, it ended up in the transmission area. I was told the torque converter is bad. New transmission replacement over $11,000. Rebuild the existing transmission over $8000 and torque converters are on back order.

I asked them to drain and refill the transmission fluid. I picked it up and it still had the issue.

The 8F35 transmission was co-developed with General Motors. I researched this and found the GM version has a known torque converter shudder issue. I searched for this same issue and found the Edge has a known torque converter shudder issue also.

The next day, I purchased Lubegard Instant Shudder Fixx and a funnel. I pulled the air box out and removed the cap from the transmission fill tube. Inserted the funnel and in goes the 2 oz of Instant Shudder Fixx. I reinstalled the air box and went for a drive. I was shocked. The torque converter shudder was gone right away. I continued the drive, making sure I included freeway driving, around 25 miles total. The vehicle was driving like new. The rhythmic surge is also gone.

I just repaired the issue for $15.45

I feel that as more BS owners are accumulating over 100,000 miles, this issue will become much more common.

Do not assume that you need a new or rebuilt transmission. Try this as a solution first. I would recommend having the transmission fluid drained and refilled with new fluid before adding the Lubegard Instant Shudder Fixx. The 8F35 is not recommended to be flushed.

It is not possible to drain all the old fluid. However, by draining and adding new fluid you will dilute the old fluid with new fluid.

Perhaps make Ford (and that dealership) know about the 2oz Lubegard Anti Shudder Fixx and boom Ford will develop a new TSB including the procedure to drain and fill the transmission fluid. All of the Ford dealerships can put this fix in play for those owners with similar issue as you had.

Nice job and awesome for sharing a fix that others can benefit from. Hope you get another 100k out of your BS

This sounds like the time that I put a stop-leak in my coolant to "fix" my head gasket leak. Spoiler alert- it fixed nothing. 100 miles later I was pouring white smoke out the tailpipe and it didn't want to go above 40 mph. Another application masked the problem long enough for me to drive it to a dealership to trade in (ok, I was 18 and broke. $500 trade-in value on a 230,000+ mile car was way better than $150 salvage).

Anyway, what I'm saying is that this hasn't fixed the problem, it's simply masking the symptoms of it. And by changing the chemistry of your gearbox oil in an unknown manner, well, who really knows what other problems it may or may not be causing.

It doesn't sound like he has anything to lose by trying the fix.

The shudder drives me insane. I pretty much want to speed everywhere to avoid it. I am still under warranty, so I will mention it to the dealer when I go in for the RDU thing...

Has the shudder gotten worse over the time since you 1st noticed and was that in April ‘24? How many miles on your 1.5L? I think I read in another post the shudder could have been related to the RDU issue you are going in for.

Btw are you in Indianapolis? I was born there not too far from the Indy 500 track. I miss spending most of May at Indy.

I am currently in Noblesville, about 20 minutes north of the county line but yes! I moved here a few years ago, but haven't made it to the spectacle that is the 500 yet. i did go to the track for the eclipse, which was really cool.

I have begun linking the shudder feeling to the RDU as well myself. I am pretty sure I "felt" the differential thing immediately when I bought it, but I attributed the sound to my knobby tires and a parking garage floor. I never turned tight enough really outside of work to notice it. The shudder has been present the entire time as well, but I do feel like it is getting worse. On top of that, I can tell the differential is getting worse as well. Sometimes on a right turn it is like I peel out and I can hear the tire breaking traction on that side. I am betting my differential is too far gone and i will need a full replacement, but who knows. I hope they somewhat are interlinked and the RDU fix will at least lessen the combined shudder.

Noblesville very nice town, close to Westfield, not far from Zionsville and Carmel. I worked at a custom electronics design business in Carmel while going to college. I’ve ridden the Monon Bike Trail a lot and from Westfield I recall it’s a pretty quick ride to Noblesville. Fond memories of Conner Prairie too but don’t know if that’s still around. If I ever move back to Indiana, Bloomington and Noblesville would be top choices.
Weather is not the best… Noblesville, the summers are long, warm, humid, and wet; the winters are freezing, snowy, and windy; and it is partly cloudy year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 22°F to 84°F and is rarely below 3°F or above 92°F.
Hope the dealership quickly fixes the RDU and shudder issues!

Thanks, I should be going in shortly once the parts arrive. Such a small world!

it is a very nice area. Carmel, Fishers, and Noblesville have recently been rated as the "Cheapest" safest cities in the entire USA. When compared to other places to get low crime rates, you will think carmel was a bargain... lol. I currently work in Carmel and also in Westfield, which has seen insane growth. Westfield is currently spending about $200MM to redevelop downtown. A huge sports complex opened there that draws tournaments from around the country and also hosts the Colts practice and training camps. Westfield is rolling in tourist dollars lately. I also live just up the road from Connor Prairie, it is still kicking. It has really grown and seen a lot of investment. The trails continue to grow as well. You can currently take the monon uninterrupted from Sheridan to downtown Indianapolis, more than 25 miles, The Nickle Plate Trail from Noblesville to Fishers is also being expanded to junction with the monon and go southeast through Lawrence and looping back around to downtown. It is a very good place to be for an active person, and the hamilton county corridor has numerous high paying jobs. I might be here for the long haul. I work in real estate development by day and hospitality by night, so it has been great to see the transformation over time.

Just wanted to say thank you for this suggestion. It has taking care of my buckin bronco syndrome.
No more gear searching, hard shifts, rpm flutter and surges. Quite unbelievable how this little thing of lubegard fixed these issues.
Dealership didn't even know or recommend this which is crazy. Def. I must try if you are experiencing these problems.

How many miles do you have on the vehicle?

Did you change the transmission fluid before adding the Lubegard?

I am at 91,000 miles , and I haven't changed my fluid yet but Ive made an appt to have it done. It was done previously though not too long ago. 25k miles ago?
I bought two lubegards so i could see if it was as they advertised... if it was mechanical or fluid related.
The moment I drove with it in the system I could feel it smooth out like butter in my pedal. There was some small hiccups and fluttering for the first 10 miles or so but it's been good ever since..
Now that I know it is fluid related I'll be changing it out fresh and putting in the extra bottle.

How is yours driving? It it still good?

More people definitely need to know about this if they are having these issues with their bsport.
