Yes I drive carefully but dark roads really are creepy this time of year. I just drove from Nashville TN to Stokesdale NC to Harrison Ga and back to Nashville for Thanksgiving. Saw so many dead deer and got to wandering if there is something I could do other than safe driving to protect my beloved Big Bend.

Here is what we did to my wife's BB to help protect it since she leaves for work at 5:00 am. I hit a deer in my 05 F150 & fortunately it did minor damage. You also might want to invest in some good deer whistles. These are the ones we have on our vehicles now since I hit the deer.

Thanks for the deer whistle link. Where did you get the pushbar? My wife has the same color Bronco Sport and really likes the look of it.

I'll be the fly in the ointment.

In most cases the nudge bars create more damage from a light animal strike than they'd protect against. They tend to compress into the grille doing damage to the cooling system and the front end and when deformed can be incredibly difficult to remove ahead of repairing everything else. A good friend who is a body and frame guy in Erie PA refers to these bars as his cash cow. They always take more time to fix than the ones without.

A full grown buck or doe hit at highway speeds is going to demolish just about any vehicle's front end, especially a unibody with multiple crumple zones designed to protect the occupants at the expense of the vehicle.

Your best bet is supplementing the lighting so you can see the deer, a good insurance policy with low deductibles and gap coverage, and doing your best to avoid them if you can. And if it's in the way and there's no way to avoid it, slow down as much as you can and brace for impact-- do not cut the wheel to avoid it.

And make sure you put the whistles on the correct direction as to not attract them! ?

I don't believe there is any evidence that deer respond to devices like this.

The lighting does no good when the deer jumps out in front of you so close you have no time to even take your foot of the gas pedal.

Wisconsin deer hunting was down 17% this year. That means more chances to smash one on the road! Dang!

I have to laugh every time I hear about deer whistles. Back in the late '90's, my employer gave everyone a pair of deer whistles as part of a safety milestone celebration. I gave mine away. :)
