Precisely. I wouldn't want it either. Although the Carfax report can and will throw some shade on repairs making them appear worse than they really are. For example, my e46 BMW had "minor damage" to the front fender per the Carfax report. When I bought it, I had a PPI done and asked the company who did it to investigate.

Story I was told was it was backed into in a parking lot, creasing the fender but doing no actual damage. Due to the crease, it was replaced, painted and done as a part of an insurance claim leading to the "minor damage" tick in the report.

Per the PPI and inspection by me and both my regular BMW mechanic and the race fab shop that built my suspension and subframe reinforcements (typically e46 issue, do it before it becomes a problem) there's not a single spot of damage underneath nor any indication the fender was replaced and repainted.

The best part: run the VIN through Carvana and it diminishes the value to under $1K!

It's not an accident/flood damaged car, and it tracks straight and handles like its on rails. It just so happens that if I ever sell it I'm going to have to explain that like I did above and hope it doesn't drop the value at resale.
Even though it may state minor, I don't buy any vehicle with a Carfax hit but that's me.

Ordinarily yes but I was after a specific option package and color combination along with low mileage and an exclusively Southern owned car to avoid rust.

I bought it for under the market at the time and within 2 years had put more than I paid into it to ensure its long-term drivability and reliability.

Mechanically it is sound, at PPI it had the typical oil filter housing gasket leak every BMW has and slight seep from the power steering hoses, both of which have been addressed. after I drove it from Arkansas to Baltimore. My primary objective with the PPI at the indie BMW shop in Little Rock was that it make the trip without an issue. It did.

My BMW specialist refers to it often as the most mechanically perfect 20 year old BMW he's ever seen. Cosmetically it needs some work- but it goes. ;)

I have a story for the CarFax disciples:

A few years ago, a driver in an adjacent lane, fortunately traveling in the same direction, fell asleep and sideswiped my wife in her one year old Ford.

Damage was >$4000. The report was filed by a large city police department, two nationally known insurance companies (his and ours) were involved, and it was repaired at a sizable Ford dealership.

Somehow, this accident and all records of it escaped the CarFax report.

I have had other dealer service incidents go unknown to CarFax. Needless to say, I'm not an advocate.

Yeah I had gotten in an accident when I had my 2010 Kia Forte and when I traded it in, I took a gander at the CarFax for sh*ts and giggles and low and behold, the accident wasn’t on there, even though it costed my insurance company $9,000 at the time.

At the very least, I'd insist on "diminished value" payout from my insurance.

Carfax is only as good as what's reported to it.

When a vehicle is damaged and repaired, the insurance company files a report against that cars VIN. Anyone doing a Carfax type report on a vehicle with damage repair can see this, and the price of that car (trade in value) diminishes. As a consumer, you are allowed to demand a monetary payout in the amount your vehicle has lost value from your insurance company. So if your vehicle after repair, is worth (example) $3000.00 less prior to the accident, you are entitled to a check in that amount. If you don't ask/request it, the insurance companies don't offer it.

Feel bad for your situation. To add an argument against Ford, in 2019 Rangers, Ford knew that they installed faulty air conditioner components that cause AC failure. When it fails, out of warranty, Ford is sticking a several thousand dollar repair on the owner for their mistake. Ford customer support is simply horrible.

Best of luck but I don’t see Ford taking care of many customers, unless they are made to.

May not have been reported so the insurance company did not have to pay out a diminished value claim. If its not reported, then there is no diminished value.
