I installed one of those fake carbon fiber dash kits and chrome vents. Doesn't make it luxurious but looks better, more scratch resistant and easier to clean.

The plastics are horrendously cheap, one of the biggest gripes I have about this car. Ford's quality of plastics is still stuck in the 2000's era.

I’m not really concerned. It’s no better or worse than the plastics in the Fords I owned before (2016 Fusion and 2019 Escape).

Absolutely nothing was damaged or broken in either of those vehicles after three years use.

I had a 58 Chevy Apache pick up truck that was all metal inside. At least 1/8 to 1/4 inch metal. If you were not wearing a seat belt (my 58 did not have them) and you got into a decent accident, you were going to hit the dash, and die. The dash was going to win the impact battle. It had a "stove bolt 6" cylinder engine, and on a good day, I saw 55 MPH with a good tail wind.

So today, I have a 3 cylinder (with more HP than the 6 cylinder), a cruising speed of 75 (or more), and if I'm in an accident (god forbid please), I have a much better chance to walk away.

Plastics are my friend.;)

My 62 Chevy ll Nova was the same. All steel dash and pot metal steering wheel. You couldn't touch the steering wheel in the Summer without oven mitts. And like your 58 Chevy, no seat belts. I believe seat belts became mandatory in 1966.

I have no problems with the plastics in my BS interior. I've owned cars from every decade since the 60's and they've all had plastics in their interiors except that 62 Nova. I still cringe at the thought of what that solid dash would do to my face or worse, a passenger's face if it was eaten it in an accident.

Close. It was 1968. I remember my parents grumbling about it.
But they were added earlier. My Grandfather cut his out in his 65 Mustang. But as you say, not mandated until 1968.

Yes. Like much of our government's "safety" regulation, many auto manufacturers were already putting seatbelts in their cars before they were mandated. As the safety benefits became obvious it's almost a certainty that ALL manufacturers would've followed suit to meet market demand. Most people don't know that, and so the government gets the credit for "saving" us from ourselves.

My 67 Camaro has seat belts; the shoulder belt was optional. I believe GM started early.
