Last night my wife told me she is in love with the BS Outer Banks and wants to go car shopping this weekend. I'm good with that. I'm retiring next year and will no longer have a commutes to Dallas. I did some initial checking and found the following...
  • Consumer reports downgraded the BS and no longer recommends it. In their annual survey the 'trouble spots' were Body Integrity 1/5, Brakes 1/5, and Engine Major 2/5. The rest of the categories did really well and ranked 5/5.
  • The Ford recall makes me a bit nervous.
What's your experience in repairs? Are you satisfied or has it been a money pit?
Thanks in advance for your comments.
Not happy at all. I have owned mine for a little over a year now. It's been in the shop 12 times since. 10 times for the digital screen not working, then back window leaking, doors not unlocking, and now the check engine light has came in 3 different times. I am in the process of doing a buyback (lemon) with Ford. They replaced the cluster twice and the gateway module once and still didn't fix the digital screen. This last time the manual speedometer is in kilometers and not MPH because that's all they could get. It's been in the shop more than I have driven it and is currently there for the last week and they don't know when it will be fixed because Ford is trying to figure out what's wrong. And in a few days the newest recall of it catching fire will have a sensor installed to let you know it's about to happen. Save your time and money, unfortunately until the bugs are worked out. Also there's a work stop on 2023 sports because of the engine catching fire issue.

Having had 2 Escapes with varying engine strenths, a Tacoma, and now an F150 3.5L ecoboost, I agree with the sentiments to go Badlands... the stronger engine is worth it. I have 2021 Badlands with 11,000 miles. Been in for scheduled maintenance and one warranty service on the fuel tank fill line; it wasn't leaking but it caused fuel pumps to trigger after just a half gallon of gas. Fixed in a day. No other recalls or service needs, no noises and no issues. Is fun to drive too.

I think the dealer is just as much a question as the vehicle itself. We purchased from a decent dealer and have had 0 issues. Currently looking at adding a lift kit and bull bar. We expect this to be our blended vehicle for years... good for everyday driving, but always ready for the weekend. =) My F150 is our RV tow vehicle so we rarely use both at the same time other than day to day.

Ford has produced maybe 200,000 sports by now so there are a lot of them out there now. There are reports of problems on some of them and some of them have been lemon lawed. There are also large numbers of people with no issues.

I have had my '21 for one year now and has around 8,000 miles. Has not been back to the dealer for any problems. So far everything is working. No chips in the paint, no broken windshield, no brake noise (yet), no rattles, fit and finish inside and out is excellent, definitely a high quality look and feel to vehicle overall. Drives very tight, super strong engine, and very refined comfortable ride. It has exceeded my expectations so far.

One thing I did do was took mine on a 45 minute drive before signing to make sure it was a good runner with no issues. I drove it on back roads, stop and go, at speed on highway. I think a good test drive before signing reduces risk of getting stuck with a lemon if you are in a position to walk away which I was.
Ditto for me, except for brake noise which came after about 5 months with my Wife's '21 Big Bend, otherwise, it's been a dream! Drives, rides and handles awesome! No service issues... my "trusted" Ford Dealer tells me that all the new Fords have the same issue with the new brake pads, so until Ford comes up with a plan, there's really nothing he can do for me... AND, he advised against Ceramic! The guy is a personal friend and has been my Service Writer since 2008 so... I trust him!

I have 6,500 miles on mine, three road trips, almost 6 months of driving it. I love it. It's not perfect, it is part of the most recent recall, but I've had no major issues with it at all. I'm very happy with it and I would choose it again (I custom ordered mine, so I got all the colors and features that I wanted). I plan on driving it a long time. That's the nice thing about having so many car choices, choose what you love and love your choice. Just remember no vehicle is absolutely perfect.

I've had my 2022 Outer Banks since February. We love it! Runs great, no troubles. Perfect here in N. Georgia!

I have a lot of mixed feelings about the Bronco Sport. Generally speaking, I like it enough to buy two of them (a '22 Badlands and a '23 Badlands expected to arrive the first week in January). So that would hint that I like it a lot. And I do. But not without reservation.

It's a bit of a quirky brick shaped small SUV. It feels very front end heavy to me, although I don't know what the actual weight distribution is for weight in the front/back halves of the car. It just feels very front heavy to me. It has as much of more torque steer that I've ever experienced in any vehicle. The cab is full of cheap materials, and these things develop little annoying rattles pretty quickly. It's loud and most definitely not a high end or luxury SUV.

On the other hand, it's a fun car. It looks great, and it's super functional for a small capable SUV. And it's safe.

I bought two of them for my kids....one son that is off to college, and my 16 year old daughter that is still at home. I trust that the BS will keep them relatively safe, and be dependable for them, for years to come. And I enjoy driving my son's Badlands when he is home.

Now...do I like them enough that I would have bought one for myself as a daily driver? Probably not, but that's just because there are other things I'd be looking for in something I drive daily. But my kids love this SUV.

I'd be furious if this were my experience. Hate hearing that this happened to you. Unfortunately, there are always some flawed vehicles that come out of production. A friend of mine had an experience very similar to yours with a BMW X7. Had a 2021 X7, lived what sounds to be your experience, was offered a flat-swap for a new 2022, which they then drove for several months and ultimately had a similar experience, and BMW then worked with them to put them in a 2023 X7...which so far, they love.

It's safe to say that their experience with the BMW X7 was hardly a common one, the same as your experience is hardly common for owners of the BS. It's your experience, to be sure, and so I'm sure that is completely frustrating. But it's almost a singular experience that hardly anybody else should anticipate experiencing.

I hope you are right. I love it when it's running but it seems to be more in the shop than running. I know every manufacturer has turds that roll out. Just my luck of the draw. The lady at Ford said there has been dozens of buybacks for various reasons but all issues are not the same so they cant pin point the issues.

So far, so good! Only problem is paint chips, one on the hood and one on the driver side passenger door, don't know where that one came from. Many other complaints about paint chips, cheap, thin paint from being built in Mexico?

I have about 9,900 kilometers (about 6,151 miles) on my 2022 BS Big Bend and have had it since last February. No issues at all. I drove it from Puerto Vallarta to Houston and back in September and it ran like a charm. Gas mileage was about 12 km/ltr (about 29 mpg).

I am a little concerned about the latest recall for the fuel injection system, but I will have to wait on that. I tried the NHTSA recall site with my VIN, but it did not pop up as being subject to the recall. I am not out of the woods on that because there is a blurb on the website that states it is for US vehicles only. I know that all were manufactured in Mexico, but mine is registered only in Mexico, so I am not sure if that website is relevant for me. If anyone has an alternative site to try, please respond. I will follow up with the dealer on this but for now all is fine.

I would definitely buy the vehicle, again. I love it!!

Yes, all manufacturers can let some lemons fall off the tree. A friend of mine got rid of his Mercedes Benz SUV after nine months because it spent more time at the dealership than at his house. He traded it for a Honda CRV and hasn´t looked back. You never know.

I love my 2022 BS BL! 9700 miles, no recalls, no issues (knock on wood), just regular maintenance. It seems that most of the recalls are with the 1.5 engine, so if you can afford it go for the Badlands.
