Not necessarily the best, fanciest, most utilitarian or useful. Just your favorite, for whatever unexplainable or silly reasons.

In my case, it was a 1991 MX-5 Miata that I bought new on my return from the (1st) Gulf War. Initially a purely reactive purchase celebrating my survival, it turned into a fun & faithful companion for 25 years.

Not the most practical car, it could barely carry a weekend’s worth of groceries, and an utter joke at Home Depot. It would unfailingly gather rain to itself whenever the top was down. No power anything. No A/C. Horrible in bumper to bumper traffic, you’d suck fumes from everyone around you. You couldn’t see past anything in front that wasn’t another Miata. Truly a dumb choice for a one-car family, barely tolerable as a second car.

But…

It’s hard to describe how insanely fun it was to drive to someone that’s never driven one themselves. It was a slot car on the asphalt, perfectly balanced, responded to the lightest touch, and had the most satisfying ā€œsnickā€ shifting from gear to gear, never needing more that two fingers on the shifter. It always did exactly what you wanted and expected with nary a complaint or surprise. Basic, unassuming, and completely wrenchable, I did 99% of the mods, upgrades, and maintenance myself, like God intended.

It was the only car I’ve ever driven that you were always aware of it around you, like an extension of you, not just another numb, plodding drive whether around the block or across country. I never reached my destination without a smile on my face.

Already delegated to Garage Queen status for several years during my post-retirement career that had me traveling globally on a weekly basis, I ultimately had to sell it in 2017 when I went to Afghanistan on a permanent assignment. Luckily it went to someone who could bring it back up to snuff and enjoy several more years of stupid-grin-on-face.

If I find myself in a situation where I can have a third car, one purely for fine Spring days on the twisties, I’m going to find another one.

Favorite car actually owned in the past? I'll say 2008 Minicooper S with a manual transmission, it was a really fun car, unpractical but a head turned

I did like the first-gen ā€œnewā€ Mini’s. I think that like so many other cars (and has been discussed at length on this forum), they grew too much over time. But then even the first-gen’s were pretty huge compared to the original.

That's what I thought, it was equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, 172 hp same engine as in the Peugeot 207 another fun car I used to drive

Peugeot’s were the bomb when I was in high school. ā€˜Course, that was in 1970, so… :D

Years back I had the chance to drive an early ā€˜90’s Miata and, yes, it was crazy fun to drive. That kind of mechanical/analog connection you have with the car was not uncommon back then seems largely absent today with all the tech assists and enhancements crammed into contemporary vehicles.

When I look back my favourite car of all time might well be the 1979-81 Volkswagen Scirocco. It was very much like what you described with your Miata, only the Scirocco had more practicality to it. No power anything except for power brakes yet it looked awesome—a clean and lovely design—and it was a blast to drive.

Plus a really cool name. ?
Definitely!

That car epitomized what I still like in a car. It wasn't heavier than it needed to be. It wasn't powerful, but it was quick and with its great handling you could really cover ground quickly. And it had decent gas mileage. It had excellent visibility all around, something sorely lacking in so many vehicles today. It wasn't over-designed or gimmicky. Volkswagen sure as hell don't build them like that anymore.

Today's VW GTI is vastly more powerful and refined than the Scirocco of that era, but it also weighs more and it's tricked out with all sorts of tech assists and enhancements. The Scirocco didn't have multiple driving modes--it had one, and it was great and it was all you needed. Back in the day your driving mode depended on how hard you wanted to push the car--it came from you, not a computer. With the mechanical/analog steering, engine, transmission and suspension you felt connected to the car. Today driving feedback and that "connection" is largely all digitalized and computer enhanced to fake it. They use the car's audio system to fake engine and exhaust noises. Damn, it's sad.

70 Boss 302. Had one in 85, Burnt Orange. The fool b4 me replaced the worn out 302 and 4-speed with a 390/FMX out of a Monterey. And yes, he left the Mercury valve covers on it as well as the flopping clutch peddle. Was cheap though, $400

This is probably not as interesting as other cars, but my favorite is my current 2018 Mustang. I ordered it just how I wanted it, so it has the exact set of features and appearance that I wanted. I like the way it drives and I like the way it looks. I would have preferred a good manual transmission, like all of my previous sporty cars, but Ford ruined the manual in 2018, and the 10-speed auto isn't bad, and actually performs better.

I always loved the Mustangs when I was a kid, especially the '69 Mach 1, and I still think it looks cool, but I could never afford one now. Even if I could, I'd be torn between keeping it stock or doing a resto-mod. I like the idea of keeping it like they were when I was a kid, but my guess is it wouldn't drive very well, so making it a resto-mod might be the only way I would want to drive it.

Mustang, preferably the first generation 65-73. Favorite year 1968 or 69.
The early years were fantastic. The '67-68s are my favourite. If I had real money just to blow on a car I'd be looking hard at a Revology Mustang based on those years.

I really like the 2010-2023 generations of Mustangs. I find the current 2024 version leaves me stone cold with its folded paper exterior styling and oversized iPad-on-a-shelf dashboard--it's atrocious. And they want waay too much money for them.

Sorry, I’ve had a bunch of favorites over the years — each for a different reason and all with some great memories (see my post in the thread about ā€œhow many cars you’ve ownedā€). Currently own the Sport BL and a ā€˜66 Sunbeam Tiger. Can’t say either is my ā€œfavorite carā€ though the Sport is great and the Tiger is a car I’ve wanted since I was a teenager.
