I remember seeing a YouTube video of somebody making a set out of milk crates.
The advantages were low cost and it folded up to take less space than traction boards.

There are a few different vendors offering folding traction boards. Do a search on Amazon.

Does anyone have experience with any of the Bunker Industries recovery products? They sell traction boards, shackles, recovery straps/kits and all kinds of related stuff on Amazon. I am considering their roll-up Tire Traction Mats for winter snow.

https://www.amazon.com/BUNKER-INDUST-Traction-Portable-Emergency/dp/B09J2HH8ND?ref_=ast_sto_dp

Can't find their website. Maybe they don't sell direct... Wondering if they make good stuff or junk ? Suggestions?
We have a set of these we carry on our beach tour truck because they roll up and store nicely, unlike the 4’ boards we have started carrying in our other ranger patrol trucks. I haven’t had to deploy them to get a vehicle out of the sand, but I can say they are well built and I expect they would work fine.

I did my own traction boards. Cost me about 65$CAD and I have another 4 feet 2x8 remaining (all they had at the hardware store in 2x8 was treated 12 feet that cost 23,99) that I'll keep as a spare or do a light version to carry around during winter. Not as shiny as maxtrax but I saved 435$ :like: they are asymmetrical because I wanted to try different pattern to see what's work best. Anti-slip tape will probably fly away very soon but doesn't hurt to try it. It stick well though and it is resistant to wet and/or cold temperature.

Might I make a suggestion. Created a stuck situation at home now to experiment with use and function. You dont want to find out when your in that situation, they suck or you cant figure it out. When I was a truck driver the 1 and only time I chained up was in A southern state in june. Better to learn when nice out than on the side of a mountain.

Maxtrax. As far as shovel get a spade and one that can be at a 90 degree angle. Works better when clearing around tires.

Traction boards can be the difference between stuck until someone comes by, paying someone to get you out or getting out yourselves. Many cheaper ones break or slide. With all the mods people do, isnt it worth the $$ to get something that works well?

Hi ALL! Im looking at getting some tire traction boards and a suitable shovel for my Bronco Sport. I noticed on amazon different types of boards from folding ones to roll up kind, to the normal board. What do you use or suggest for these and shovel size to keep on hand?
Go treads are awesome traction boards.

I had the chance to test my homemade traction board today(first time testing any traction board at all). I was stuck in the mud and I though it was the perfect time to test it. I had other options like a rope and a jeep ahead of me but I wanted to test it. My badland was moving a couple of inch back and forth but I was going nowhere for a while. So I moved back as far as I could and put the board in front of the wheels and it drove out easy with almost no wheel spin. I was surprised how easy it went. (That time)
10/10 would recommend. I put the second board in front of the other because I thought I would also need it there. But the board slip away and almost scratch my paint. It missed but you can hear the cameraman cringed loll. Be sure the boards are secured before driving on it.(note to myself)

Cheap traction boards are made of less flexable plastic and shatter spectacularly at cold temps. Ask me how i know... I bought the max traxx the mini ones though. I do note they arent designd with the overlap feature that the larger ones have so you cant "build a road" as easily but im failrly sure that it works OK with the smaller ones, just not Amazing like the larger ones.

With a Hi LIft jack, you can jack up the tire to install chains, or make your own traction out of rocks or tree branches. Once, when stuck in the sand down in Mexico, I realized I needed to turn 90 degrees to get out. I jacked up the front and pushed the truck off the jack. About four times did it. Then some plain 2x8 boards worked fine as traction boards when we jacked up the back and placed the boards under the tire. I find a small Pulaski works better than an Army shovel. It is narrower, so can reach under the vehicle when you are buried in sand or mud.

The ARB are nice pricey kit. Plus lifetime warranty. I’ve never used recovery boards so don’t have any first hand usage. I’ve seen maxtraxx used and get destroyed 1st time out. Melted and cracked. They’re all plastic, gonna happen
