For what it's worth, the signal quality using a wired connection is much better than Bluetooth. I'm old and I can hear the difference.

Google maps allows download of off-line maps, so you can still use it even if you don't have a data connection. You won't get traffic updates, but directions and information about points of interest are reliable.
true providing you plan ahead and have enough memory

One thing I discovered on my wanderings yesterday is that having google maps running continuously is pretty hard on the battery. I was able to plug the phone into the other usb in the dash after my carlinkit was connected and it kept the sync from trying to connect to the phone via the cable or bluetooth. Dueling connections is a problem with the carlinkit and sync.

Yup. This is why I simply plug it in. I use a short (>1 ft) cord and place the phone in the mesh basket mounted to the passenger side of the console. Easy, neat, reliable connection, the best quality sound, and a fully charged phone every time I get out of the car.

You can find a cable that only has charging capability, with no data transmission.

The carlinkit adapter I'm using displays at a higher resolution than the phone does though the cable. I'll try to get some pictures soon to show the difference. I think it looks better with at the higher resolution, but at a certain age bigger fonts start to become attractive.

Several folks I work with refuse to use "Smart" features in the car.
These are the same folks who have trouble using their cell phone for anything but text and phone messages and are completely lost using self checkout in the stores.

Quite simply, they don't know anything about technology and are afraid to look stupid so they don't use it.

I had the same issue until I realized it was tied to my setup through my provider. Once I switched settings in their app to allow messages and contacts to sync with Android Auto, voice commands started working better. Not perfect, but I can finally send and read texts with it. You might want to check how your voip provider handles message permissions with connected devices.
