I like to use Waze for my “map” because I’m used to it. I also like to listen to books on wireless ear podswhen I drive. When my phone is plugged into Sync or wirelessly connected I lose the ability to listen on my ear pods. Is there an easy way I can have my ear pods as the speaker when using Sync?

Do you have Android or iPhone?
Do you use Android Auto or CarPlay or just on Bluetooth?

I believe that is pretty much universally illegal to drive with headphones. If you are using CarPlay, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that Apple would disable headphone use while using CarPlay. It is illegal to wear headphones while driving because it is dangerous. There are plenty of arguments against this, mostly that you can turn your car stereo up loud enough that you can't hear outside sounds just like wearing headphones does. I don't know why you choose to listen with headphones instead of through the stereo. Just be aware that a law enforcement officer will most likely ticket you for it.

I am able to do it. I connect my iPhone via bluetooth to my earbuds (I don't use iPods, but I assume it will be the same) then when getting to the car the phone connects wirelessly to CarPlay and switches sound to the car's. At this point both the car and earbuds are connected via BT but sound outputs through the car. If I now press pause on my earbuds, the sound stops and if I press pause again, the sound resumes, this time through my earbuds.
Try it.

Surprising that there are so many states that allow it. I guess my eyes are now open, even though I will not drive with headphones on ever.
I wear ear-plug style headphones like these when riding my motorcycle. They plug into a Cardo communication device that uses a Bluetooth connection to my phone. My ears have taken a beating over decades of flying (and other stupid stuff I'm not will to admit I've done), so I do everything I can to preserve what's left. The earplugs all but eliminate the wind/road noise while riding. My eyes are always moving and my head is always on a swivel while riding, and I don't think I could hear anything over the road noise anyway, so I don't believe I'm giving anything up by wearing the earplug headphones.

I wear earplugs on the motorcycle, though sometimes not when I am just commuting to work. I also have a Cardo system on my helmet but listen through the earplugs with speakers in the helmet. I'm old enough to know my hearing is not as great as it used to be but it is still pretty good compared to others I know. The earplugs I have (and I've tried several different brands/types) block some frequencies more than others. Hearing much of anything over road/wind noise is usually an issue without earplugs, but with I at least get some little bit of a clue that something is coming behind or the side of me some of the time. The earplugs I have currently settled on are by Earaser and the backup that is nearly as good is from Loop.
