Took my new (to me) BS OB out for a drive. Full tank of gas and it said I had 363 miles to empty. Halfway trip on the 80 mile trip and it said I had 391 MTE. Finished the trip with 80 miles back and a reading of 251 MTE. What do you use if you can't trust the gallons in tank indicator OR the miles to empty?!?!
the fuel gauge is generally pretty accurate, its a float system and that's about as accurate as you can get and the reason it has been used farther back than the 60's . its just fords way of displaying that info to the driver that I am not a fan of but it is a minor inconvenience, and I just have to figure out at what state they programed it to drop a bar and it will be 50% more accurate, or accurate to the 1/8th a tank as opposed to trying to figure out if it is at 3/8th or just under 1/2.

the distance to empty is pretty good after you have been driving a bit, if you are driving on fairly flat ground and generally the same speed. for me that is imposable, when I leave my house I have a 19KM climb up a grade 8 hill, then it is a pure climb over the next 70KM to work, coming home it is all down hill. for example when I got to work yesterday I had 365 km of range left, when I got home it was 420km after I drove 90km. but when I am in the flatlands highway driving it is pretty close. I like the feature on my truck, when you put it on the trip one or trip 2 it shoes you how many L (or gal) you have burned in that trip. its nice for guessing how much fuel you need to add when filling up also. that data is collected, all they would have to do is a firmware update to display it.

Moving from Mazda CX-5 to Bronco Sport in a week
Did my first fill up Tuesday after work, took a long drive yesterday, freeway and roads with very few stop signs or lights, in my 2025 Bronco Sports Outer Banks. Showed 33.6 mpg for the entire day. My first two weeks, short trips mostly in city, was 26.5, still happy and much better than my CX-5 was.

That's interesting, I sold my 2015 CX-5 to get my 2025 Sports Outer Banks, and i agree, I'm much happier with my Sport!!

My Fuel Gauge has only registered 7/8's of a Tank for Months Now never goes to Full anymore. Monday the Pump kicked out Pumped another $1.60 in it still reads 7/8's of a Tank.

Do you mean when filling up it stops at 7/8's or it stays at 7/8 and never moves down? Unless you happen to be using the same pump the whole time (unlikely) any reason you haven't taken it to the dealer yet. That would drive me crazy.

There is a special (and expensive) filter in the fueling system that can be damaged by overfilling. The old days are gone. When the pump clicks, you're really better off calling that good.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but, when I fill up I set the nozzle on hands free so I can wipe the windshield and rear glass. If I'm standing near the fill door I can hear the gas rush up the tube and trip the handle, shutting off the flow. I have a habit (ocd) of rounding up the paid amount by .25, .50, .75 or .00. Usually only a few cents additional. I believe that once the nozzle is tripped, the gas will flow back towards the tank thereby allowing for the little additional gas I put in. The nozzle while I'm holding it never trips. Am I safe to assume that I'm not harming that filter?

I'll look to see if I can find the article that clued me into topping off, being a bad idea but the gist of it, was recommending not to top off, else risk this expensive part.

I used to squeeze every little bit in there too but the article convinced me it wasn't worth it.

Here is a vid about it.

If the parts of this system on my truck were to be damaged, its over $900. Just for the parts.

I the old days when paying cash I used to round up. For instance I would ask for $10 and if the nozzle clicked off before reaching the $10 or another even amount to avoid having to give me change the attendant (NJ) squeeze in as much gas as they could. Then Ford came out with the capless fuel filler and if you tried to top off the tank after the nozzle clicked off the gas I found that I would end up with a puddle of gas on the ground. Paying more money and wasting the gas.

In reading the above posts I was not aware of the potential damage to overfilling the gas tank. I was only aware of the gas spilling out if the tank was full and leaving a puddle of gasoline on the ground. I learned something new today. :)

Thank you for posting this, very good info. I did notice that when I did my first fill up Tuesday, I had to position the pump fill to allow the gas to flow freely, and when it was done, I felt some resistance, I don't know if that is how the "capless" fill works, or if I just need to adjust the angle a bit. Was not bad.

Watching his explanation, I kept trying to figure out how the gas got out of the tank, I finally figured that was the invisible "magic happens here" box .. LOL.

Good info, thanks again.

I must agree with DWG as I too came from the "old school" of gas fill up. The diagram shows that the distance from the gas tank to the vapor canister isn't far enough away for even the small amount of additional fuel to avoid getting into it. I have been in the lucky club for years. No more. When it clicks, done!

I believe that Ford (like most manufacturers) account for topping off the tank. Your owner's manual warns against the practice, but I believe there's enough extra space that you won't likely harm anything during the fill up process. It's after-the-fact you need to be concerned with. If your tank is completely filled in the morning, then sits in the hot sun all day it's possible the fuel could expand enough to inundate the vent system. If you're filling up on a road trip with the intent to get right back on the road, I don't think there's much likelihood you can damage anything by topping off.

The pump flow rate has a big impact on when it clicks off. If the fuel is flowing rapidly you'll get some foaming, and the foam will rush up the fill port well before the tank is completely full. For normal, every day driving, here's what I do: I have some idea of how much fuel I need when I begin fueling. I latch the pump handle on the maximum flow setting. I watch the meter. When the meter shows within a gallon or so of my estimate I reduce the flow rate to the minimum. Once it clicks off I'm done. I think this is a happy compromise between one-click and done, and topping off.

Perhaps, based on your logic Mark, my adding few cents more of gas to reach a particular dollar total that I mentioned previously, maybe, just maybe I don't reach the vapor canister. Neither I nor my wife has ever smelled gas in or around the Bronco Sport. Still, I am a bit wary of continuing my habit (ocd)! But I like your explanation, Mark, as it relates closer to my situation.

I just run it on the slowest auto setting. Less foaming, gives time to clear the windshield etc. once it clicks, thats it.
