it's time for a replacement windshield. Where's the best place to get it?

A couple of days ago I noticed a small crack coming from the lower passenger side of my windshield. I haven't looked at the outside but inside, it looks to be about 18 inches long.

I called Safelite and was told it was too long to repair. I have not called my insurance to see if they cover windshield replacement but there wasn't an option to add that when I signed up for Progressive. I'm in Texas if that matters.

And I just checked Safelite's site. It'll be about $1k but didnt' specify if it was official OEM Ford or a 3rd party brand.

Any suggestions on brand or where to get it repaired or with OEM or aftermarket glass? There is a local glass shop near me that I used about 10 years ago and I really liked them so they may be an alternative to Safelite.

There is a lot of information online on the pro's and con's of OEM vs OEE (after market). I suggest reading that information before deciding. Also I would check with your dealer to find out what glass shop they use to repair/replace the windshield. You may consider even going through the dealer to replace the windshield. It may cost more but I would think the dealer would then be responsible for making sure everything is correct as well as the glass shop.

A couple of years ago I purchased an Escape and the driver side rear quarter glass has scratches on it that was replaced through the dealer under warranty. The dealer ordered the glass and took it to the glass shop. The glass shop that the dealer used kept rejecting the glass because there were issues with the trim piece that needed to be replaced with the glass. I was impressed that at least the glass shop didn't blindly replace the glass without inspecting it first.

Back when windshields were around the $200 mark, insurance companies didn't mind paying for a replacement every now and then. Now that replacement windshields are anywhere from $500-$1000 many insurers don't cover broken windshields unless you purchase specific coverage for it. Some have reported positive opinions on applying the clear window film.

I'm retired from 40 years in the car business, and oem and aftermarket windshields have to all conform to federal standards. The bigger problem is after the new windshield is installed, the cameras have to be recallabrated. Most likely a dealer may have to do that part but safeties and the other side national glass companies should be able to do the second part.

I was told the 2025 only has OEM glass available. Not sure what model you have. Similar cost for me but will be making a glass claim and paying my deductible.

On windshield number 5 now, all done through SpeedyGlass, all OEM spec'd glass and re-calibrations done at the time of install without any issues. Fortunately, all covered under enhanced glass coverage, just paid token deductible.

i had a new windshield installed last year and it cost me $720 which I paid out of pocket. The glass was OEM and had the same information on it. The windshields are really cheap glass; I got hit with a small rock on the edge of the driver's side. Took it to ford and they said nope, they ran a ball point pen down the crack and it hung up and that was all she wrote. I have windshield coverage now.
