Interior noise when window open

So, stupid query time, what are these vents for?

An old prof of mine used to say, "There are no stupid questions, only stupid people."

The vents are to provide path for air to exit the cabin when the windows are closed. When the HVAC fan blows air into the cabin it has to go somewhere. Further, when you close a door you temporarily increase the air pressure inside the cabin; without vents you'd have to slam the door pretty hard to overcome the pressure increase.

Thanks so much! So, using this logic, all cars have these vents? If so, why are they in the BS so 'noisy'? I recognized the sound right off because I would typically hear this same noise from the front of cars when switching from fresh air to recirculated, but I've never heard it come from the trunk area on a vehicle and with no deliberate pattern.

Yes, there must be a way for air forced into the cabin by the blower to exit, otherwise the blower motor is trying to blow up a metal balloon.
