Hello! about a month ago I purchased my 2024 big bend and ive been nothing but happy with it so far. However, upon taking it on my first camping trip i noticed some storage/utility features that i wished the vehicle had and I was curious about adding on. Instead of simply listing the solution that i was thinking about I will describe my situation before proposing a solution in case anyone has some better out-of-the-box ideas.
  • I have 2 dogs that I take camping with me, they get to sit in the trunk/cargo area which is the perfect amount of space for them. I was able to fit everything but this was a lighter trip and I have been racking my brain trying to think of a way to better utilize the space of my car and to have my dogs in the trunk area.
  • I tried the overhead cargo zipper pocket (link) that attaches to the three grab handles, however I could only fit my emergency supplies in there since the roof in the front is uneven and the handles themselves are not a very stable anchor point.
  • While sleeping in the back I noticed that I did not have an overhead area to hang my lantern which I would have really appreciated.
  • I have a net in the back to prevent the dogs from licking people and drooling on the seats. I have it attached to the lasso hook in the back and to the grab handle in the front. My friends let me know that it awkwardly touches their head when they sit in the back because of the angle (even with the headrests on). I have seen the metal cage-material barriers for keeping the dogs in the back but I wanted something more flexible since I change who/what im transporting frequently. (Pictured below, red X will be made clear later)

With my issues listed, I would now like to show my proposed solution:
  • The trunk area has a vaulted ceiling and I was wondering if anyone has tried to install cargo hooks / anchor points to take advantage of that area. I have seen the cheap plastic ones on amazon that just screw into the trim but I dont think they will be able to hold up tents, cots, chairs, etc.
  • I was wondering if I can take off the trim and find some points in the frame to drill into or possibly put something back there for the screws to bite into.
  • I am concerned about hitting wiring, airbags or just drilling into the body itself by accident.

I'm thinking of either:
  1. Installing some heavy duty cargo hooks and attaching a cargo net to hold items toward the ceiling area
  2. Bolting some struts to the side to either hold up oddly shaped items or to attach a MOLLE panel
I'm thinking of something like this but with metal strut (this was taken from a 4runner forum, I believe he used the grab handle screw holes)

Below are the areas that I was considering putting these hooks/struts at:

Let me know if this has been tried before or if what i am thinking is possible/viable. I don't have too much car experience, just a little DIY experience so I'm going to the people that are more knowledgeable than I am

It's definitley close to what i'm looking for, I might give this a shot and see if I can make some good anchor points with it. I saw this previously but didnt think about using it as an anchor point for a larger panel

As far as creating a barrier for the pups. Maybe something like this would work? I used pvc but you could use actual gate/kennel material so they couldnt lick/drool past it and use the bungee cord or whatever you choose hooked the headrests as mounts like I did for the pvc? Completely disregard this if I’m completely off what your thinking haha.

Since I have a receiver hitch, I just use an ATV cargo carrier from Harbor Freight to store extra gear. The ATV carriers sit higher so they don't affect your clearance. I use latching tote boxes to keep my gear clean and dry. The cargo carrier doesn't seem to affect my gas mileage. I also have a roof box for storage, but that changes gas mileage significantly.
