I had my windshield replaced do I need to re-calibrate the camera? The Safelite guy that did it says it is not necessary as there are no error messages after the replacement. Then I get an auto generated email two weeks later from Safelite saying I need to have it re-calibrated??? Do I really need to or is it ok as the first guy said because there are no error messages? Thanks in advance.

the place that does the windshield should do that as part of the install, at least they do up here. and the answer is yes every time you put a new window in the system has to be recalibrated.

it has to do with the glass its self, no windshield is exactly the same and hence the optics can be refracted tiny amount between different windshields. what this does is through out the distance of the auto headlights, or the line detection for the lane keeping, or following distance for the adaptive cruise. they may all work, but the car might think that white line is 4" more in one direction than it is, or the following distance when in adaptive cruise might change.

None of that shit works all that well anyway, especially if that lane keeping crap is any indication.

Yes, absolutely. You may not get an error message but it simply won't work. A different glass material or the windshield not sitting properly can cause refraction problems for the camera. Ford manual is very specific as to what to watch for when replacing a windshield.

The Safelite guy who replaced the windshield on my MIL's Buick SUV simply drove the vehicle in circles - first clockwise, followed by counter-clockwise. No idea how correct or effective that was, but he said that was "how we do it".

mine works real good, I just don't use it normally. the auto headlights and windshield wiper have been flawless for the last 18 months I have owned it, the only issue I have had is with the crash detection/emergency braking in the winter. it seams heavy snow and heavy fog mess it up a bit.

That’s how the vehicle compass’ were calibrated when they first came out, don’t think it will work with the camera/radar equipment on the new cars.

Yeah, I had serious doubts and told him so.

I just had my windshield done and they had to hook up a laptop with the proper software and just go for a drive. the guy said sometimes it is calibrated in 5 min sometimes it takes up to 20 min of driving.
