have a 2021 Bronco Sport, Outer Banks. 1.5L engine, 38,000 mile, just had the vehicle into the dealer for 2 recalls two weeks ago, today I broke down, belt torn and wrapped around the frame. They havent called me yet, but i suspect its was casued by the water pump......how do they get away with NOT covering a known problem out of warrenty?

That might be a tough one. From all I can tell, the water pump issue is a slight seepage causing loss of coolant, not the bearings or whatever locking up. Was it low on coolant? Would they have caught that the last time it was in?

It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask. I'm assuming one recall was the battery deal. What was the other?

The latest guidance I read regarding the service bulletin for the water pumps required a flush and refill of the coolant to prevent a recurrence. My guess is that a failed water pump contaminates the coolant with debris that will damage a new pump.

I wish they had at least flushed it when I took mine in. I was about a quart low on coolant but I had topped it off a week before.

I'll let it get low again then make an appointment.

so someone from Ford called today, not the dealer, something similar to Customer relations, but she called it something else......told me it was the alternator that went bad, and broke the belt......bad news, a little over 1800 to fix ?!?!?!? Good news I only have to pay a little over 500, Ford will eat the rest......but.....isnt 1800 a little high for an alternator? And why didnt the dealer call?

Water pump is covered under the 5/50k power train warranty. You’re good.

Would this also include an alternator for jst671's issue as well?

According to Ford's Warranty Guide:

Your vehicle’s Powertrain components are covered for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first. The extended coverage applies to the Engine: all internal lubricated parts, cylinder block, cylinder heads, electrical fuel pump, powertrain control module, engine mounts, flywheel, injection pump, manifold (exhaust and intake), manifold bolts, oil pan, oil pump, seals and gaskets, engine thermostat, engine thermostat housing, timing chain cover, timing chain (gears or belt), turbocharger/supercharger unit, valve covers, water pump; [the rest is about the transmission and drive train]
Components such as the alternator and AC compressor are considered engine "accessories," which generally means they are not required for the engine to function. Engine accessories are typically not covered by the powertrain warranty.

You don't say....an alternator is an accessory, and is not required for the engine to function. That's a correct statement, as long as the battery functions to keep the ignition, injectors, and PCM functioning. Albeit for maybe an hour before the battery drains due to not being charged.

As a general rule, if it requires a belt to operate it's an accessory.
