So the torque convertor went out on our 21 Bronco Sport. From what I was told the clutch came part. yes its a 21 and yes we have 97,000 miles on it. We have third party warranty coverage. The dealer has had the car for 4 weeks today and the warrenty company would only cover the least expensive option which was putting a new OEM part in the car. The dealer/Ford didnt want to put a new OEM part in the car because they were afraid it would have the same issue. So they are doing some rebuild that costs $1500 more. Ford is paying for around $900 of that $1500 and we have to pay the rest. So because they dont trust their own parts it is costing us more money. Along with the $1400 catalytic covertor that is cracked and they wont cover becuae it passes emmisions tests. Its ok to leak into the car as long as it passes the emmisions test they dont have to cover that. I like the looks of Fords but along with other Ford issues we have on other cars their quality or lack of is making this the last Ford for us for a long time. Not to mention the rental car cost for the month they have had the car.

I'm sorry to hear about your issues. The whole 'not trusting their own part' would've sent me thru the roof. 97000 miles is A LOT of miles in two years. For me, that would have been two tranny fluid and filter changes. Just out of curiosity and to maybe add some semblance of rationalization into a crazy situation, did you by chance get those done?

Yes I know it’s crazy mileage. And yes all the maintence is kept up very well for fluid and oil changes. So more of a part going bad I guess. Just seems likes it a lot on Fords we have had lately

Sorry to hear this. I am worried about what will be the next thing to break on my Bronco. I am closing in on 72,000 miles. I keep up with all the maintenance, but had to spend $1,200 about a month ago to fix a couple things that Ford knew was a problem but refused to cover it in any way. I actually love the vehicle, but just waiting for the next issue to pop up.

its like there’s another agenda. Don’t have a part? buying time? More shop fees?

I had a very similar experience with my Land Cruiser @ 10 years ago. Nearly same miles. except the cat caught fire and it was the ECU (eventually discovered) that went out …in a 2 month period.. 2 Toyota dealers, 3 rentals and nearly 5 months of lies, tow trucks, denials and arguments. They wouldn’t or couldn’t fix it.

We all have or will suffer experiences like this. Very frustrating. Machines fail...so what.. I blame the dealer Owners. They are individually owned

I was just at my local Ford today. Service rep is super guy… but he’s getting worn out with the lack of talent.

my best friend bought a new corvette Z06. His $150K dream car. Been thru a lot to get to this place In life. It’s been a nightmare so far.

You're the first to report a torque converter fail, and I've not see this on the web as a common failure. For that reason, I would have gone with the OEM part and saved the cash on the rebuilt one.

And I'd be questioning why a rebuilt part is more expensive than a new OEM...sounds like they are unable to get the new OEM one in a decent time frame, so they are going after a rebuilt one because it's easier to locate and obtain.

I personally never buy a rebuilt part anymore. I had bad luck years ago with a rebuilt alternator. Went through 2 under warranty within a two week period due to cheap build standards, done overseas. I buy new OEM parts when they are available. My F150 has 180K, and is still on its original starter and alternator to name a few parts. If OEM lasts that long, I'll stick with it.

Because yours's failed at 97K, I'm assuming it had a flaw in materials/build. Rare, as it has not been reported other than yours.

I think the dealer does not want you (or them) to have to wait for an OEM part.

We finally got the Bronco back yesterday. And I do think the clutch in the torque convertor must have been going for a bit. It accelerates much better. While we still had a big rental car cost for the month, a positive is that Ford is covering the costs that the extended warranty didn’t cover. Still a hassle and not living Fords reliability but at least they stepped up a bit.

How did you noticed the Torque Converter was failing. I have an appointment for a new transmission because it sounds like a grinding noise when shifting at low revs and shakes at low speeds shifts.

Glad it worked out but how is rebuilding better than oem that got you to almost 100,000 miles? If true, oem would get you close to 200,000 miles and your Sport would be recycled into a Tesla frame crossmember by then. Sounds like dealer money grab.
