Hi - I have had this problem as well. I just left Ford dealership and they told me that I have to replace the whole muffler and that due to mileage it is not covered under warranty. When I asked what the issue was, I was told it’s an internal failure - wondered if this was possibly a recall issue as others have had the same rattling? I have a 2022 ford bronco sport outerbanks.
I agree, I would check out a auto shop and see if they're quote is cheaper. Sucks that it happened or you noticed it out of warranty

As Kent said, it would not be the subject of an NTSB or EPA recall, since it is not safety or emissions related -- but failures like that, that are clearly not the fault of the owner (assuming no visible damage) can be handled with a "customer satisfaction campaign" (if the problem is common enough) or a "goodwill" repair. That is most likely when a vehicle is just out of warranty.

Does Ford have to do it? Nope.

Would it be smart business? Sure would.

Sometimes a mfr will offer to cover a portion of the cost (say 50%) if the vehicle is significantly out of the warranty period.

If they tell you to pound sand, then you might consider going to an independent shop (NOT Midas or Meineke) for the repair. There's no point in giving an unhelpful dealer your business.

Here's one illustration. There many different designs:

Thank you - definitely NOT mechanically inclined but I do have a friend who’s a mechanic - I’ll ask him to take a look - I appreciate all the suggestions!

Did you try to call the Ford 1-800 number in your owner's manual or talk to the service manager & see if Ford can assist with the repair? I had a trans go bad in a Ranger that I had that was a couple years out of warranty, I talked to the dealer & they said Ford would pay for the trans if I paid the labor. It cannot hurt to ask.
