Bronco Sport outerbanks 1.5 ecoboost
I recently purchased a new 2024 Bronco Sport Outerbanks with less than 700 miles on it currently. I noticed engine tapping that gets louder on acceleration when the engine is cold (dashboard engine temp gauge shows zero to one notch). After about 15 minutes when the engine warms up (engine temp gauge shows 4 notches) the tapping subsides and the engine sounds more normal. I am aware there is a normal tapping sound on the ecoboost engines but this is louder and more apparent tapping on acceleration with a cold engine. My wife has the same outer banks model Bronco and her does not appear to tap like this when accelerating cold, just the standard ecoboost engine sound tapping (she has around 8000 miles on hers). What could be the cause? I hear the high pressure fuel pump can cause this, but would that happen only when cold and if so why? and my wife's 2023 doesn't seem to do that. Any idea what may be causing this tapping that sounds like a lifter or something, and why when its cold is it more apparent? and is this bad? Thanks for any help

Your Sport is basically brand new, dont second guess whats going on with it.
Take it back to the dealer service department and tell them your concern and have them check it out, thats what the warranty is for.
Hopefully you have a good dealer, if not, don't be surprised if they tell you "the sound is normal" or "they all do that" which you know is not true, at least your concern will be on record in case the sound leads to a bigger problem.

Agreed. I am learning this lesson right now on another vehicle for a problem that Ford caused but is sticking to the buyer.

Anything that isn’t right gets taken straight to the dealer now. And when I mean anything, I mean anything. Make it their problem, not yours. That is what Ford will do to you if you don’t., make it your problem.

By the time your warranty ends, you either have confidence in the vehicle or you know that you have a lemon

Have you opened the hood on both at the same time to compare? Also, have you compared the amount of engine bay insulation between the two vehicles? It's possible the newer one has less insulation.

I took it to the dealer I purchased it from and they said exactly what you said that this is normal. They said the sound is from the high pressure fuel pump. I told them that the sound like a sewing machine does not occur with my wife’s 2023. They then said for the 2024 Ford removed the hood insulation due to it being a fire hazard and it makes things sound louder and this is normal. When I got home I checked my wife’s 2023 and hers does not have the hood insulation and it does not make that sound. I feel very discouraged now and have lost confidence to the point I don’t know if I will purchase a Ford in the future.

If our ā€˜23 OB were doing that, I’d do a precautionary oil change but not really expect it help much. Also keep an eye on oil color (not yellow) and coolant level as some are writing about coolant leaks. Good luck this is disappointing to hear about.

Hey there. Can you send over a message with your VIN and the name/location of your local Ford dealer? I would like to look into your tapping concerns on my end.

I have the hood insulation on my 2024 Badlands. It is there, built Dec. 9-12, 2023 and delivered Last Friday, Jan. 12.

What the hell, mine does not have the insulation..... I feel like I purchased an incomplete vehicle. Is yours a Bronco Sport?

Thank you, When I took it to the dealer to look at it they said nothing was wrong and I asked if the oil was good, was there enough, etc.. They said they did the multi point inspection, I really don't believe they did that and felt like they just wanted me outta there.

Yes I did, we pulled both vehicles side by side cold. I had her rev mine and then hers. there is a distinct tapping that all ecoboosts have that's normal and minimal but mine had more of the louder tapping when revving the engine just to 2000 rpms. Yes, hers also lacked the insulation. Maybe its an outerbanks thing and the Badlands have the insulation.

Yes, Bronco Sport Badlands.
Just ā€œneedā€ an aftermarket engine cover and the cowl insulator piece (see pic). ?

I have a Lincoln engine cover, and the firewall blanket , cowl insulator, has been on order for months. It seems that some dealers won't sell without a VIN matching the part number.

I''m not sure how I combined answer to 2 posts in one reply, but I'll continue.
When I inspected my car, before signing any paperwork, and I insisted on looking under the hood, the salesman said, "And I didn't steal your engine cover." Primarily I was looking for the insulating blankets, the rubber weatherstripping on sides and front edge and battery type.
Hmmm, I never mentioned the engine cover to him in any discussion. Maybe the salesman are paying attention to the forums?
BTW, it is an EFB type battery. I put it on a battery tender as soon as I brought it home. One never knows the state of charge of a brand new battery.
