Hello, the root cause is the caliper guide pins. Ford issued a TSB to replace the pins. Two dealers I went to confirmed it was covered, problem was the kit was backordered. I waited over 6 months and took action myself. I purchased the pin kits on Amazon which are Ford OEM, the same kits the dealers have backordered. I had the pins replaced, upgraded to performance rotors and pads and problem solved. No noise, no dust, smoother brake action. Sometimes you have to take action yourself. IMO the dealers are avoiding this. Especially when you can buy the kits on Amazon. Good luck.
Just to add, there is also a rear differential issue that has been reported. It can be difficult to distinguish between the Caliper Pin issue and Differential noise. In my case it was the pins, to pin down the exact cause its best to drive with your mechanic and perform what ever maneuver where the noise is most pronounced. A lot of times the mechanic, Ford or Independant will not be able to duplicate the noise. Murphys Law every time, when you want to duplicate the noise it never will.

When the dealer tells you that the howling brake noise while reversing is normal, they are actually not lying...;)

There is truth to that. In the case of some BSports the OEM Caliper Guide Pins can bind or stick and not letting the caliper release fully when using the Parking Brake or Brake Hold function. The new kits have a nylon inner sleeve in the rubber boots that the guide pins go thru. Supposedly this will eleviate the binding or sticking issue, time will tell. On another subject concerning the rear differential noise which can add to the brake noise. Turning off the Traction Control will eliminate noise when turning while backing in reverse. Its more about the process of elimination. Sometime noise can be hard to pin point when you have different noises concentrated in the same area.
